Today we’d like to introduce you to Mica MUA Lamour.
Mica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Boston Ma. I’m the first generation here in the USA my parents are originally from Haiti the West Indies, growing up in a west indies household I would say I learned my fashion, style and creativity from my mother. She was a seamstress and a tailor so watching her make my sister’s, brother and her clothes along her clients would amaze me, looking at the pretty colors and patterns she would have. I could always remember my mother asking me my opinion on the styles of the clothing when she would make them for me but it’s unfortunate I didn’t inherit her seamstress skill, lol… but my skills came in another form. My passion for makeup started when I was younger when I would sneak off playing with my mother’s makeup. As I got older, I started watching various makeup artists on YouTube and Instagram. I spend most of my time executing and teaching myself original applications. I did not get comfortable in my makeup until 6 months after I started. That is when I started to get noticed for my makeup work, creativity and landed various jobs.
When first starting this journey in 2007, it was just a hobby that made me happy and excited learning different techniques and making people feeling beautiful. It quickly turned into something I love to do. I enjoy being creative and trying different looks. I always love being the oddball and looking different, I like to make heads turn while getting compliments saying damn you pulled that look off! My motto has always been: “To be confident is to beYOUtiful”, having confidence and being yourself is what makes your natural beauty come out. Makeup and your own personal style just enhance what is already there and now as a freelance makeup artist, I have confidence in myself and my work something I didn’t have when I was much younger in doing anything. I’m still learning different things from different people that have the same interest in what I love every day. I don’t stop because I feel I’m good at what I do there is always something to learn about the beauty and fashion business. I just keep at it and keep at it hard. I have to go hard to show my kids when you love something that makes you happy you go for it ten times harder!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Whenever trying or learning anything in my experience it never starts out a smooth road. I have had times asking myself what am I even doing stick to a 9 to 5 job. I’ve gotten discouraged and disappointments so many times from family and friends but I realized it is part of the job. You have to have those discouragements so you can be stronger or go hard and go around making a new pathway. You need to make your own roadways to get where you want to be. My advice to the young women starting out listen and take in advice, but only you can make that pathway to your future, only you can make those dreams come true for you, and only you can achieve in working hard in your goals. It’s up to you to make it happen. I know there will be times its hard but life is never easy to break down those walls because you have something GREAT waiting for you with hard work on the other side but only you can do it!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mica MUA – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a Makeup Artist in the Boston and Randolph area. I don’t have a set place with my clients come to me but I travel to my clients and I also do freelance work. My MUA work is more soft subtle on the face, as a makeup artist, I can do all types of looks ex-glam look, natural look and horror look. The most looks I do is the natural or glam looks per the clientele request. I’m most proud of my brand is my work and the reactions I get after applying the makeup. It makes me feel so good I am my hardest critic when it comes to my work. What sets me apart from others well I’m not sure what the others can offer, but I believe my 11 years in the industry, combined with my strengths in fashion and beauty and my knowledge and passion can definitely set me apart from the others.
Who have you been inspired by?
I would say my grandmother and mom inspired me in my life reason why are the stories they use to tell us and all the pictures I have when they were back home in Haiti. How they would get up surviving day by day and how my mother may have been the only child but having all cousin’s in the same household it never felt like she was the only child and how their summer trips were full of fun. My grandmother was first to leave Haiti and come to the USA Boston MA leaving behind her only daughter back home not speaking a word of English. She worked hard to send for my mom and then both my mom and grandmother would send for one family at a time. My grandmother was the solid rock of our family and scary too lol she didn’t play when it came to her family but there”s my mom came to the USA had 3 kids and her husband died at an early age leaving behind young kids it takes a strong women to do what she had to do for us and for that I appreciate her raising me and my siblings the best way she knew how to.
