Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Beck.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up in Wisconsin, I always felt like I was an outsider in a stereotypical midwestern community. In a family of 4 girls, I was the only athlete. I was a cheerleader and a gymnast, but I wasn’t “girlie”. Most importantly, I hated the Green Bay Packers (blasphemy!). I knew two things very early on in life. I wanted to work in sports and I needed to get out of Wisconsin. More importantly, Boston was calling me.
Flash forward to 2015, with a Bachelors Degree in Athletic Training and a Masters Degree in Injury Prevention and Performance Enhancement, I left my job in college athletic training after having an epiphany. I didn’t want to wait for athletes to get injured, I wanted to inspire people to become their best self.
When I arrived in Boston, I had no contacts, no job, just a dream. I wanted to revolutionize the Boston fitness community. I wanted to develop my own style of training. I wanted to mold functional training, strength training and injury prevention techniques together to develop an overall healthy lifestyle amongst my clients.
Today, I have taken my love of obstacle course racing, boxing and general fitness to become a Tier 3+ Personal Trainer at Equinox Sports Club in Boston and to be the Senior Workout of the Day writer for Spartan. By introducing my own format of training, the Spartan community, along with my clients at Equinox, are introduced to mobility, stability and functional training to grow stronger a while also working out compensations and the “everyday aches and pains”.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We are very fortunate to be in an age where women are more accepted into the fitness community. The stereotypes are still very much present, though.
Muscle isn’t sexy. Weights are meant for men. You need to be a size 2. We are all just trying to look like someone else.
False. Women can be strong and sexy. You do not need to fit into a mold. The most successful women stand out from the stereotypes.
This is how I found Spartan. Spartan has always encouraged women to be themselves. You can crawl through the mud. You can lift heavy objects. You can jump over walls and swing across monkey bars. Spartan challenges women to step out of their comfort zone. It empowers women to break out of society’s stereotype. Spartan has shown me that I can be both a beauty and a beast.
Please tell us about your business.
It is not normal to live with pain. Whether you are an athlete, a weekend warrior or an everyday desk worker, pain is not something you should be used to. Gaining strength should not come with the risk of pain. This is what my work is geared towards.
While I focus on injury prevention, my training is not a typical injury rehab program. I focus on using functional movements and weight training to gain mobility and stability. Through things such as compound movement training, barefoot training and unilateral stability training, the body corrects its compensations naturally while gaining total body strength and fitness. The body functions as one single unit. The purpose of fitness training should ultimately be to work the body as one unit.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Society is still behind on accepting women into the strength training community. Women are widely accepted in the fitness community in yoga, pilates, dance and cardio training, but when a woman starts talking strength training, there is still a general sense of pushback. Yes, men and women are biologically different, but that does not mean that a woman does not know how to train either gender. Women are just as capable of writing effective workouts as men are.
