Today we’d like to introduce you to Lissette Carter.
While playing softball at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, Lissette realized that her upcoming career as an RN may have resulted in being a product of the rat race. She received an opportunity as a senior to study and train with prominent entrepreneurs in Boston and by faith bought a one-way ticket to pursue an unconventional path. After 10 years of training entrepreneurs all over the country, Lissette stepped down from leadership to settle into marriage and motherhood and also become a published author. Her first book, Rookie Mommy prepares women for their pregnancy journeys with real tips and humorous anecdotes of her own journey. Rookie Wifey, her second book, prepares women for the journey of marriage in 2018 while staying true the origins and fundamentals of marriage. Both “Rookie” How-to guides are an ode to her father who taught her discipline, hard work, and respect on and off the softball diamond. Today, she has founded Better & Better, a personal development and business consulting firm as a pathway to revitalize and equip companies and women with the tools they need to succeed. Her motto, “Business grows when you do”, is inspired by Lauren Hill’s song Doo Wop, “How are you gonna win, it ain’t right within.” which solidifies that no matter how well we think we are doing monetarily, if our mindsets and hearts are not solid, our success will always revert to our true level of personal growth.
Whether she is speaking and training large groups or having a heart to heart during a coaching session, Lissette’s passion to help people get to the next mindset in their lives and learn to live in victory will always be the fiber of her being.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Roads are never consistently smooth. There are always cracks, bumps, potholes, and continuous maintenance. My road started with a massive sinkhole. My family was adamant about me finishing college, especially since I was almost done, but when you have a strong and pure nudge that you know is without a doubt a calling, you need to chase it. Many people thought I was crazy to give up school to learn business mindsets but there was no doubt in my mind where I needed to be. Throughout this road, I learned how to build a career single, dating, single, dating, engaged, married, and with stepchildren. Transitioning into and out of these seasons made it challenging, as every new experience may be. One thing I learned to be true is I was always the most consistent when I had a coach to keep me accountable, a lineup of personal development books, and a routine in the morning of praying, reading, and exercise. Keeping my mind sharp was always very important to me. When I was young, I had a pattern of depression and anxiety that always tried to creep into my life often due to some childhood trauma. Reading my bible, building my relationship with God, and choosing to take my eyes off of myself to help others have always healed that part of me. We are always going to have thoughts of doubts and fears. It is a matter of choosing what to believe that makes all the difference.
Please tell us about Better & Better Coaching and Training/ Rookie Wifey.
What sets me apart is my experience. With 10 years of training all kinds of people all over the U.S. and Puerto Rico, I have an advantage than those that just have life coaching certificates. Being bilingual and a woman in 2018 doesn’t hurt either. I am raw and real and that’s what people look for these days. Success principles are all the same, but coming from me, I can reach people of my demographic that may have never heard them before.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
As a Hispanic woman, I have spoken to many others who feel that we have been slighted when it comes to female leadership. But I never felt that way. I remember when Selena came out in theaters and when JLo’s first album dropped. Because I always focused on people like Selma Hayek or Penelope Cruz, even though they may have had their own struggles making it, I never knew a thing about it. I just believed they worked really hard. And I believed the same for myself too. They made me believe that. When I look at Jessica Alba and her success, it’s hard to believe that anyone else couldn’t duplicate that. No matter where you come from and who you are, you are always going to go through struggles building whatever it is your building. Period. I don’t, however, see many ladies in my industry of my decent. But in no way does that hinder me. That excites me! I get to become one of the first Puerto Rican pioneers in the personal development and business coaching. Even though there are a lot of men in this industry, I have an advantage because I am a woman. Let’s be real. Women are the one who has more to balance on their plates. Men are wired differently than women. That’s not bad. It’s just different. And the amount of woman that are rising up to further their careers and start businesses while taking care of their families is increasing. I would love nothing more than to help lead them to become the best they possibly can be. There are only barriers if I choose to believe they are there to stop me. I’ll just use those challenges as stepping stones.
