Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberley Pendleton.
Kimberley is a British born, independent designer whose work shows under the name of The Waughdrobe and Boston Millinery. She specializes in vintage style headwear with a unique and vibrant flare.
Kimberley describes her work as: “ Modern Millinery”, practicing a traditional art form through a contemporary lens. Her designs are rooted in classic millinery shapes to which she adds her individual style, creating modern hats that transform the women who wear them.
She uses flat-pattern techniques and machine and hands sewing to provide structure, form and function.
Her interest in Millinery began back in 1998 whilst studying for her fashion degree in the United Kingdom. A friend had asked her to create a hat for her sister who was going through hair loss due to chemotherapy. The joy and femininity this one special hat brought to this young woman, instilled in Kimberley a love of hats which would endure the test of time.
As a professional milliner, to date, she has had the pleasure of creating hats and headpieces for clients all over the world.
Has it been a smooth road?
After moving to the USA and having two children, starting a small online business was indeed a challenge. As my children grew so did my business. It’s been a juggle but it has also been a blessing as it has allowed me to be a stay at home Mom and be there for both kids.
My advice for anyone starting out is choose something that you love to do and make it fit with your lifestyle. Start with a positive energy and know that if you have a dream you can achieve it!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Waughdrobe – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in a flat pattern, fabric hats most are influenced by yesteryear design with an emphasis on the 1920’s Flapper style cloche. I am most proud of my handmade products. Care and attention to detail go into every single item I make. I love putting my customer first and making them happy. Whether it be a woman who has lost her hair due to chemotherapy or a mother of the bride/groom looking for something special for a wedding day and everyone else in between.
I love helping women feel special!
Who have you been inspired by?
First and foremost, Coco Chanel. She was the inspiration for my original college thesis. Anita Roddick who founded the Body Shop in my hometown. Oprah Winfrey, striving for unique success. Driven and dream bound. Women like these drive me forward.
