Life and Work with Kay Piazza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Piazza.

Kay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story starts in 2006 @ my grandmother’s wedding. I was handed a camera to hold and when I decided to toy around with it, I got lost in its settings and the ability to create. That evening, I spent two hours walking around the neighborhood taking photos of flowers and texture on the houses and ground. About a year later, my family got me my own camera. I remember specifically that they gave it to me @ my graduation party and remember leaving all my friends there so that I can walk around with my new camera. I’ve always been a nature geek and grew up on National Geographic’s

I’ve always been a nature geek and have done a lot of traveling as a child so National Geogroahic inspired me to get creative wth my lens in the wild. A few

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Lots of struggles being a full-time artist. For one, making money and fulfilling your dream of becoming financially stress-free can be frustrating as an artist. The market is big and forever changing. My biggest struggle was getting paid for the kind of Photography that I love doing. I found myself photographing a lot of birthday parties, anniversaries, baby showers, etc because there was always consistent pay. What frustrated me the most was having to compromise on my concepts and ideas. What got me through this was understanding that money will never bring me happiness. If I can say anything to an aspiring artist out there – do what you love no matter what and success will follow you. Period.

Please tell us about your business.
I’m most proud of the emotion and passion that is conveyed through my images and concepts. My edgy style and integration with nature and grungy city allies are what sets me apart from the rest. I love finding beauty in the “ugly”. People know me for my creative touch. I love fashion but I truly believe the setting and location make an image. I’m an outdoor shooter and thrive in dark places. My photo shoots always consist of hikes around the city and discovering new places.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
The biggest barrier to female leadership today is our support system. We need to always be lifting each other up and contributing to each other’s success. There’s a lot of competition and attitude in the industry that WILL stop you from working with someone all out ego. Let it go, no one will ever be able to match your skills and techniques.
