Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayna Aronovitch.
Jayna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hey! I’m a creative entrepreneur in Providence, Rhode Island. My bachelors in Fine Art is what brought me to Rhode Island in 2010 and since I have fallen for the magical city of Providence.
The city and state have the perfect blend of history, intimacy, and culture. I love the gorgeous coast (a short drive away), and all the close-knit communities with their own character.
Over the past decade, I’ve met many inspiring peers, been involved in some amazing creative circles, and freelanced in several fields. Working in interior renovation, photography & production styling, has filled me with so much experience over the years but working in small business retail got me dreaming about starting my own shop. With some help from close friends, and collaborators, I have been lucky enough to pursue this dream.
I am the driving force behind Lore; Providence’s latest curated handmade-lifestyle shop. Full of plants and amazing scents, we source talent from locals and beyond. Within our gallery-esque atmosphere, you can peruse a vast array of handcrafted goods. From stationery, gifts, jewelry, apparel, house-wears, & art, all are carefully arranged to inspire you.
Lore is located on Brook Street, in the Wickenden Area neighborhood of Providence, We are less than a block up from an amazing wine shop and one of the oldest Portuguese markets in the area. Behind the counter of that market, sits one of the Oldest members of our neighborhood. When I moved to the street, He welcomed me with so much encouragement and pushed me to stick it out. I’m glad he did because I have become a proud member of the amazing group of merchants in the area, who work hard to make our neighborhood a destination.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Providence is literally a giant pothole, so be careful when you drive around our streets, haha. But in all honesty- it’s all about the journey, and there are many roads along the way.
Initially, you have to pull the trigger on the passion that drives you. Then you get some other folks excited, pack up the car and go. You follow your instincts and inner voice. You work collaboratively with other’s and find your tribe. You’ll probably experience some financial hick-ups, and you might have to leave some toxic, un-full filling situations behind. You might be afraid of the irregular weather patterns and unexpected twists & turns, but you keep going. And after a few years, you find the right routes to take. You’ll notice the terrain is a little more enjoyable, and the surroundings become a little more scenic instead of ominous.
Ultimately, anything that may appear difficult is worth doing, and you’ll always grow, learn, & improve from any experience that you have, regardless of success or failure. My advice is to continue to challenge yourself in order to grow and learn, and don’t take failure to mean end-times, it’s just another part of the process of getting to where you strive to be.
Please tell us about Lore.
At Lore, I wear all the hats, pretty much all at once, it’s a balancing act!
I specialize in sourcing & curating all of the amazing goods we sell. Creating a visually striking display and atmosphere. And produce inspiring promotions, through styling and photography. Most importantly though, I strive to create an inclusive, creative community that supports & highlights our talented, local makers.
I think what sets me apart is my ability to connect with many different people. Everyone always mentions how welcomed they feel at Lore, and that makes it all worth it. As long as people find our shop and it’s offerings of artistic wears inspiring, inclusive, and motivational, I’ll feel full-filled in my work.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Admittedly, I’m used to pouring myself into my job. To alleviate that, I enjoy biking, beaching, and forest bathing anywhere in Rhode Island and beyond. I love traveling, visiting different maker spaces to get inspired, and supporting my peers in their similar endeavors.
A year ago myself and my (life) Partner scored an amazing home in a suburb of Providence. An old Victorian with an amazing garden-like backyard, and a giant barn. The experience of being a home-owner and property care-taker has been my latest inspiration. We have something that’s completely unique, magical, nostalgic, and Ours. I’m inspired by places and there’s nothing more moving than having a piece of land, all to yourself. I’m incredibly blessed and am constantly grateful for this experience. I think it truly helps me to do my best.
