Life and Work with Cristin Doyle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristin Doyle.

Cristin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was a senior in high school, I saw a sign for Elizabeth Grady School of Aesthetics in my guidance councilor’s office. At that time, I was convinced I should go to school for photography but that poster stuck out in my mind and I decided to visit the school in person and see for myself. From then on, I realized my true passion was working with people helping them to feel more beautiful on both inside and out. I began cutting my teeth in the industry by starting my career on Newbury Street in Boston, learning about advanced skin care techniques and the beauty industry as a whole. It was when I began working at Benefit Cosmetics when I realized, the true importance of eyebrows and how they made people look and feel, especially now in today’s culture. I became entranced with threading and spent five months honing my skills. I had no idea at that time that those skills would end up becoming my true passion and expertise within an industry with so many various niches.

I found true satisfaction in creating perfectly groomed arches for people and the appreciation my clients have when they leave feeling better about themselves has never gone away. Being able to thread on top of knowing how wax and to perform facials is the perfect balance for anyone looking to get into the beauty industry.

Has it been a smooth road?
As an esthetician for 15 years, I can say it has not been an easy road.

Oftentimes, you see women competing with one another instead of guiding the way to grow together which can make this business cutthroat at a time and a big reason why you have to be confident in yourself and stick to your guns, as well as treat every client like they are your only client. Word of mouth and reputation are some of the only things you have to hold onto in this business.

I have also worked for people that wanted everything done “their” way which at times left me little room to be creative and grow which is something you have to truly focus on yourself regardless of where you work or who you may work for. You cannot rely on anyone else other than yourself at times which is always a good way to go into things considering the competitive nature of what I do.

Probably the hardest part is learning patience. Patience for honing your craft. Patience for building a clientele. Most of the big time estheticians have spent years developing relationships with the people who go to them and it does not happen overnight. It is hard to make money and it is hard to create consistency so to be successful in this field you truly have to love what you do and stay focused. The human element of it is truly the most important because your clients are the ones that will keep coming back and asking for you by name if you give them the experience they want. You will find that many clients are fiercely loyal whereas others will see the first person who is available which is why you just have to maintain consistency with your work so that it speaks for itself.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My true specialties are brow Shaping and tinting, Brazilian waxing and customized facials, and really trying to understand how to give my clients exactly what they want. What differentiates me from many others in this industry is the passion and quality I put into my work. Again, this goes back to the human element of what you do. Having an engaging personality and instilling confidence in people is almost as important to some people as the quality of your work. When you make someone’s day by helping to feel better about themselves, as well as being a friend and confidant, it only goes to accentuate what you are doing for them and leave an impression so they will always think of you when they need things done.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Patience, consistency, and to love what you do. You’re building relationships with every one of your clients and they are trusting you with your craft.
