Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Manning.
Caitlin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I remember vividly when my interest in photography began. I was about 12 years old and on Christmas Day I found a pink plastic camera under the tree. It wasn’t something that was even on my list, but I took my first shot with it and I’ve been hooked every since.
Growing up, I started out taking photos in the backyard of mom’s beautiful garden. Once I moved on to high school, I enrolled in an elective class that combined graphic design and photography, allowing me to broaden my skills in a more professional way.
My teacher at the time saw how much I loved photography and being in the darkroom, so he gave me as much free time as I wanted to come into the studio and work on my own personal projects. I began using black & white film, learning more about contrast and composition, and really figuring out why I was so drawn to taking photographs.
I never had any formal training with photography, it came naturally for me to see through the lens. Within the last year, I’ve been taking weekend workshops to fine-tune my skills as I continue working as a freelance photographer.
My expertise lies in capturing the simple but important moments, allowing me to work on projects ranging from portraiture, street & documentary photography, editorial collaborations, and even travel photography.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve had my fair share of obstacles and challenges within the photography industry, it has never been a smooth road. I’ve worked hard to get where I am today and continue to work hard to achieve goals I set for myself for my career, and they are very achievable. You just have to have the motivation to go out and get it.
My advice for women and to the young women just starting out is to push boundaries and keep creating. Never stop learning as industry trends and technology are always changing. Be proactive in your journey, find joy within the journey and work hard to promote yourself as well at your work. Have confidence in your work and yourself!
Another piece of advice that has worked for me tremendously is to reach out to someone established in the industry and ask questions. A few of those people have become my mentors and are cheering me on and watching me grow as a photographer.
