Conversations with the Inspiring Yasmin Nunez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmin Nunez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Yasmin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I knew early on as a child that one day I’d become a stylist. I grew up in the inner cities of Roxbury and Dorchester, I’d sit outside and braid for the kids in the neighborhood. I then started doing my family members hair who then encouraged me to attend cosmetology school. I attended part time and was done in 10 months. Upon graduating, I proceeded to try everything from hair all the way to pedicures trying to find my nitch. I worked at a few salons in the area, but it wasn’t until I started working at Super Cuts and Drybar that I felt the spark.m

Fresh out of school you’re only equipped with the basics. At Super Cuts I learned different techniques on how to cut and color men and women hair. From there I went on to Dry Bar, a piece of sunshine on a rainy day. Drybar has been one of

the most funnest jobs I’ve ever had. There is where I fell in love with styling. The before and after makeovers are my favorite. The feeling you get when you see the smile on your clients it’s priceless.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
“Has it been a smooth road?” No!! The beauty industry can be intimidating and challenging at times especially in the beginning.

Juggling trying to jump start my career and being a young mom added pressure to being able to provide financially. That being said I left the industry for a few years in pursue of “money”, I went into corporate America to try and make ends meet. However I would still do hair on the weekends and having two little girl whose mane I had to upkeep by braiding, practice was never a problem. It wasn’t until I got laid off which caused me to reevaluate everything and go with what I love to do the most, HAIR! That’s when I decided to apply to Super Cuts and later on Drybar. At these jobs I occupied many roles from stylist to supervisor. I gained confidence and even a greater love for the industry. Work never felt like work, which caused me to literally fall in love with my career.

I started doing more hair, Started posting more on social media, and with word of mouth of family and friends I now have a solid clientele I can count on.

What should we know about Hairby_yas? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m currently working as a freelancer, I travel to clients homes offering services such as color, cuts, blow outs and braids. My love for hair usually has me bouncing around between learning new techniques from coloring to braiding to everything in between. I also work at a hair salon where I meet different people everyday, which futher helps me build my clientele.

In terms of my brand, I feel I don’t really have one. I’m still in the process of dabbling between services trying to perfect a techniques which will hopefully take me to evolve a brand. Right now I consider myself as “A woman with many hats”.

What sets me apart is that I’m me. I focus on my goal and I’m always trying to perfect my craft. I try and never compare myself to anyone. I work hard and I learn from others. I think we can all make it in life if we work hard.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
My Advice to upcoming stylist is to stay true to yourself, work hard, stay educated and focused. Stay current by staying updated. Practice makes Perfect!
