Conversations with the Inspiring Teryn Brewer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teryn Brewer.

Teryn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At a young age, I always knew I loved making people feel beautiful, So, after I finished high school, I went directly to Cosmetology School. Once I completed school, I started my journey at Salon Capri as an apprentice. I then became a personal apprentice to my mentor and one of the owners of Salon Capri Nicholas Penna Jr, which lead me to now being a full-time stylist at our Newbury Street location! Education is extremely important to me, I wanted to be well trained for my clients who sit in my chair. I have attended multiple classes at L’Oréal Professional academy In NYC, completing there cutting series!

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting out in any career isn’t the easiest. Especially, if you’re starting out as young as I did. But that being said it has shaped me into the person I am today. I did a lot of growing from when I started to now. For my career, everyone starts from the bottom-up so it’s very enlightening that you have people to look too and admire and think to yourself, “that’s my goal” to work that hard and be that successful. I am lucky enough I found what I love at a young age. But I would advise a young woman to try as many things until you find your passion! And stick with it!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Hairartbyteryn from salon Capri story. Tell us more about the business.
For me, I tend to say, I don’t specialize in anything particular. I want clients with any type of hair to have the confidence when they sit in my chair that at that moment I specialize in their hair! I think that’s what I’m proud of the most, I really take the time to be educated in all types of hair! However, currently, I do a lot of balayage and foiling! I have a big blonde clientele, which I love! For me, as a stylist, I try to connect with my clients and try to make them feel as comfortable as possible, at the end of the day it’s their hair and I want them to love it even after they leave and style It themselves.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I was lucky enough that my mentor found me as a good fit and took me under his wing! He taught me all aspects of the industry and what really stuck with me is being great at hair isn’t the only thing you need to become a successful stylist. Networking is a big part of any career! Find your people, get out there and be inspired. Even if it’s just making a new friend who you have things in common with. Being around positive and driven people helps anyone reach their goals!
