Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Kuehn.
Stacey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My background includes cosmetology school in Tucson, Arizona, working and training in NYC at Bumble and Bumble, training in London, and then back to NYC for a career in freelance hairstyling on the fashion scene which included worldwide travel… advertising clients include TRESsemme, Wella, L’Oreal, Garner, and Schwarzkopf. Celebrity clients include Taylor Swift, Katie Holmes, Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen, Penelope Cruz, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Having worked for bridal editorial and advertising, I now focus on luxury weddings and cutting hair in the salon on Cape Cod… my aesthetic is understated and effortless haircuts and styling although occasionally I love to go for it with strong looks as well.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have always had a short-term goal to be achieved in the next few months, a longer-term goal to achieve in the next few years, and a long-term 10-year goal plan… I find that makes each step less overwhelming, more attainable, and easier to focus on.
Each step of the way I try to revise my plans as needed with high hopes and a realistic eye.
I try to recognize opportunities and pay attention to times when it’s a good idea to change things up a bit.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Stacey Kuehn Hair story. Tell us more about the business.
As a hairstylist, I try to pay attention to what’s going on in the media, so my work stays fresh… my passion is cutting and styling, I’ve always focused on that and never gotten into color or chemical services. A friend of mine says, “Stacey makes hair DO things” which I love! I love to create fun textures and shapes when I do studio work.
But there is a time and a place and with my haircutting and salon styling, I prefer low maintenance understatement with an eye on the client’s natural texture… I am super proud of my talented special event hairstyling team as I have trained them myself and some of them have been with me for years!
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I feel as a female in business you have to be confident and comfortable taking charge. When you meet with resistance, it’s important to be able to stand your ground in a way that shows you are passionate about what you do. It’s not about ego or putting anyone down, it’s about showing that you earned the position you are in.
