Conversations with the Inspiring Renata Goncalves

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renata Goncalves.

Renata, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
During the summer, I would visit my home country of Brazil. While visiting 4 years ago, I had asked my aunt to teach me her ways of shaping brows and I can remember absorbing her techniques any chance I could.

At 22 years, old my fascination with eyebrows began to grow. My family and a few close friends began letting me practice my new found techniques on them.

As word of mouth spread, what started out as a hobby began to get a bit more serious. With a lot of great feedback, I got the courage to start my own Instagram page. As a senior in college majoring in business, I thought all paths lead to the corporate world. However, the closer I got to graduating, my interest in building my own business began to unfold.

After graudating from college, I went to aesthetics school. A couple of months after finishing that program, I finally found somewhere to work. There, I had the opportunity of growing my clientele before opening my own storefront in Somerville.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing is ever easy. I have learned through the years is that patience and a positive attitude are key.

After I got my esthetics license, finding a place to work was difficult. In the beauty industry, especially in the field of eyebrow shaping, there isn’t too much guidance as to where to start. I had to learn pretty much everything on my own.

The advice I would give is to do your research. Even if that means sending a simple question to the board of cosmetology or a high-end salon you want to work for. Go for it. You won’t know until you try.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Brows by Renata story. Tell us more about the business.
The eyebrow shaping I provide emphasizes on the client’s natural beauty. I am known for using a caliper ruler tool to first measure out the brows. No two eyebrows are the same, so I do my best to make them as symmetrical as possible. If in certain cases, I see that there is no improvement in growth or texture, I let the client know. So, I think that’s something that sets me apart from others. I’m an honest artist who wants clients to feel their best every time they sit in my chair and to help them embrace their natural brow features.

What I am most proud of as a brand is that I try not only to be professional but also personal. I love keeping up with clients and seeing them progress/grow in life. One moment, I’m doing someone’s brows for prom and next thing you know it’s her college graduation.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My mom. She has all the brains and practicality behind running a business. She is extremely supportive and has pushed me to persue this dream.

My aunt. Without her, I wouldn’t know the fundamentals of eyebrow shaping.

Kelley Baker. She is goals. After following her on Instagram for a while and obsessing over her work, I was able to take her master class in New York. She is so sweet and I love that she wants to share her knowledge with those who want to learn.
