Conversations with the Inspiring Meghan MacLeod

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan MacLeod.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been a hairstylist for almost 6 years. It’s always been a passion of mine but got a late start in the industry. I went to college after high school and after graduation, I had a job in the drug rehabilitation field. I liked my job but felt like something was missing. I chose to go back to school at 24 for cosmetology. It was the best decision I have ever made. I absolutely love my career. I am able to be creative every day at work. And I have the best clients! There’s nothing better than making someone not only look beautiful but feel beautiful. It’s so important especially in today’s world to feel good about ourselves. And I want that for all of my clients. I started working at Carl Michael Salon after Cosmetology School and have been there ever since. It’s such a great company to work for. We are lucky enough to have in-salon classes from some of the greats in our industry (Wendy Belanger, Chris Baren, Jamie Wiley, etc.). It’s like a big family and I’m grateful for all the women I work with.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was really hard trying to establish myself as a hairstylist. Gaining a clientele and making a career out of doing hair takes time and hard work. It’s not something that happens overnight. But with hard work and an amazing team behind me, I was able to do it. It can be hard working every weekend especially when my friends and family are off and doing things. But I wouldn’t change it for anything.

What should we know about Hair by Meghan MacLeod (at Carl Michael Salon)? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I love all aspects of hair (cutting, coloring, and styling), but I specialize in color. My favorite trends right now are balayage and shadow root blondes. I am most proud of keeping up with current trends.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I am so grateful to work in a field where women and men have equal opportunity. It’s an amazing career that I feel empowers women to take control of their business.
