Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline Kawalek.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Madeline. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in Maplewood, NJ with a passion for musical theatre, I was exposed to makeup artistry from a young age in the behind-the-scenes of my shows. Inspired by the artists ability to bring characters to life, makeup soon became my favorite creative outlet. Having received a letter of recommendation to the makeup program from Bobbi Brown, I was led to pursue The Business of Cosmetics at Emerson College in Boston, MA. While still able to involve myself in theatrical artistry, I became heavily immersed in editorial, beauty and makeup for film, while working as a MAC and Bobbi Brown artist.
Since launching my freelance career, I have crafted a creative style that uses high quality and results-driven products to create glamorous looks that bring out a client’s natural beauty. While working between New York City and Boston, my talents have expanded in the realm of editorial, beauty and celebrity artistry.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has absolutely been a tough road! I think everyone has goals for where they want to be with their career and I am not even remotely there yet, having only just graduated a year ago from college. I’ve had some amazing opportunities and worked with several well-known celebrities, but so many people can say the same thing and I am only just starting my journey.
I am constantly reminding myself that it isn’t something that happens overnight and the best thing I can tell anyone is to be kind and patient with themselves. There are periods of time, where you aren’t doing exactly what you want to be doing, but as long as it’s something that contributes in getting you to where you want to be then, you’re doing exactly what you should be. Don’t feel like you have to be working all the time, but persistence and a hustle proves to be worth it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Makeup by Madeline Kawalek story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a makeup artist known for everything from beauty and bridal makeup to celebrity artistry! Having worked as both a MAC and Bobbi Brown artist, I understand and appreciate the real artistic ability that comes with makeup. I love to create and play (which is why so many of my makeup looks on Instagram are a little more dramatic) but I also love working with a client to bring out their beauty through natural, glamorous makeup looks that never come across as cake-y or “too much.” I firmly believe in the Bobbi philosophy that makeup shouldn’t mask your features, so I’ve definitely tried to replicate that in my business and artistic skills.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Absolutely! As I mentioned previously, I’ve always been extremely creative. Having been involved in musical theater throughout my childhood, I was exposed to makeup from a really young age and was always fascinated by it. I loved to draw and grew up with a natural drive and hustle that always propelled me forward with any work or projects that I was involved in.
