Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Andrews.
Kate, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I remember the day I moved to New York City. I was 18 years old and I was going to take the city by storm with my acting, singing and dancing abilities. Fast forward to sophomore year of Pace University and the one thing I had always planned to do no longer appealed to me. Around the same time, I figured out that my talent for writing had become my passion and I moved back to Boston to attend Emerson College for journalism.
After earning my master’s degree in broadcast journalism, I secured a producer position at a small, independent station in Boston right after graduation. There, I rose through the ranks and ended up not only behind the camera but also in front of it as a TV show host, reporter and news anchor. A few of the people I had the opportunity to interview include Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, and Nicholas Cage and I’ve been privileged to report from the red carpet at the Academy Awards and from Philadelphia during Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S.
Eventually, it came time to make a change and I decided to leave journalism to go a different route. But I still needed an outlet for my writing and creative efforts. So, I founded Fashionably Kate & Co., a Boston-based website for travel lovers, fashionistas, and feminists. I started off posting outfits and chronicling my travels but have added women empowerment to my agenda. Earlier this year I launched a monthly podcast, “In Her Own Words,” that focuses on women doing what they love and making the world a better place.
Now, I live a few miles north of Boston with my partner-in-crime and husband, Alex, as well as my furbabies, two cats named Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. When I’m not working on Fashionably Kate & Co., you’ll find me day tripping it around New England, hanging out with my family (specifically my mom, sister and my Nunny), reading, working out or planning my next travel adventure!
Has it been a smooth road?
I doubt that anyone has had a smooth journey in life. We all have our troubles and I’m no different. But, I believe that those road blocks and speed bumps that I’ve encountered along the way have made me wiser and more grateful for everything that I have achieved.
For anyone starting out, I would say, try and learn from your mistakes more than your successes and never lose your sense of wonder. I believe that a life well lived means that even if you have to deal with some very adult situations, you never actually feel like an adult. Also, red lipstick can be used as a weapon.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Fashionably Kate & Co. story. Tell us more about the business.
Fashionably Kate & Co. is a website focused on travel, fashion, and feminism. I’ve basically created a brand based on my lifestyle and personal convictions. Though most of what I focus on is travel tips and photography, my outfits and other aspects of my daily life, my journalism roots take over frequently. I’ve written a few editorial posts on restricting access to guns to prevent gun violence, immigration, and the #metoo/#timesup movement.
In fact, it’s my journalism roots the I believe sets me apart from the pack. I will often feature interviews with small business owners, inspirational speakers, and influential figures to share their stories. And of course my podcast, In Her Own Words, introduces my audience to women that I find inspirational and aspirational. I was so proud when In Her Own Words debuted on the podcast store – please check it out!
On a more sartorial note, I think that my personal style is yet another thing that sets me apart. Many influencers have a very similar aesthetic. At the beginning of FK&Co., I tried to align my brand with what I thought was popular but felt I was doing my readers a disservice by not being true to myself. Fashionably Kate & Co. has really taken off since I embraced my love of pink – including my pink hair, my eclectic style that steers more towards the vintage than a designer (though I do love my Chanel bag and Louboutins!) and my somewhat intense approach to travel.
And, I think that is what I am most proud of. I have learned to love and accept myself and my beliefs through Fashionably Kate & Co. and I am able to share that with the world.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Nothing is the end of the world.
Even as a little girl, I took life so seriously. It’s taken me more than two decades to figure out that just because you get rejected or you miss out on an opportunity, doesn’t mean you are a failure. It just means you have to go out and seize that next opportunity with gusto!
