Conversations with the Inspiring Jennifer Needre-Garfagna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Needre-Garfagna.

Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was 27 and in the restaurant industry since I was young. I was managing a private golf club restaurant, Indian pond country club in Kingston ma. It was in 2009 that the economy took a hit. So, did my management position. So, I decided to take a leap of faith and go back to school. I was scared of any change. I was scared the hair industry would not be as lucrative. But, I took my chances. Fortunately, they paid off. I received best colorist at graduation and hit the ground running. I knew at my age that I needed to make an impact and quickly. Statistics show it takes on average 3 years to build a solid clientele. I did it in one. Once I built a solid clientele, I decided to become independent. Which also led me to Instagram. I underestimated the power of social media. I quadrupled my clientele in one year as an independent stylist. Of course, my clients are so incredible and with their referrals and putting long hours into my color work with classes, webinars, etc. I am now opening my own salon/suite. I absolutely love what I do, I love the art of color and making women feel they’re most beautiful. I am so grateful. And I am so happy where my life has taken me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There were many struggles. Being that I was a bit older to be switching careers, I had bills that many younger women did not have. Going back to school full time wasn’t easy. I went to school during the day and worked at a friends restaurant at night just for extra money to get by. Luckily, I did have my husband who was very supportive financially and emotionally during those times. Some advice would be, do what you love. If it’s something you are absolutely passionate about, it will pay off in the end. And work hard. Also, this industry is very competitive. Focus on bettering yourself and your work and don’t let others bring you down. The clients will come for your work, they know when someone is passionate about this industry and when someone is not (continuing education is a must).

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Artistry by Jennifer & Co. story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m specific in color. Color correction, newer techniques such as balayage. I’m also great with blonding and formulations. Color is a chemistry. I’m most proud of all of the amazing clients that I have acquired. They are like family to me. All of us bring something different to the table. Figure out what sets you apart from other stylists. I think the time I spend on my clients sets me apart from others. I’m a perfectionist. Sometimes, to a fault, as I am very critical of my own work. At the end of the day, it’s the smile on my clients fave that is so satisfying.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
There are a ton of classes for stylists to grow. It is very important to keep up with trends. You can never stop learning. Social media has become so helpful in finding these incredibly talented artists that travel the world to teach everything they have learned over the years. From color to cutting to even the business end of this industry. There are also many webinars that are very affordable available for all hair needs.’ Behind the chair’ offers hundreds of classes and webinars as well.
