Conversations with the Inspiring Jennifer Hanway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Hanway.

Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I used to be a professional dancer, but an injury when I was younger stopped me from performing.

I transitioned into the health and fitness industry, and my personal and professional health journeys collided when I started working with, and mentoring under a Bio Signature Modulation Practitioner. Up until then, I had suffered from terrible gut health to the point of being hospitalized and put on a morphine drip.

Conventional medicine had not given me any answers, but working with her not only gave me the best health I had ever experienced but inspired to want to do the same for others. I became a Level 2 Bio Signature Modulation Practitioner and retrained as a Holistic Nutritionist.

I’ve been very lucky to work at some of the top boutique fitness studios in London and Boston, and have led teams at world-class health retreats across the globe. I’ve also worked with members of the Royal Family, Hollywood A-List and Olympic Athletes.

I currently have a private practice in Boston and Newton Centre, and partner with an amazing Doctor on the Upper East Side in New York. I regularly speak at wellness events (most notably W.E.L.L. Summit and SXSW) and am launching a 28 Day Guided Gut Healing Program in September.

Has it been a smooth road?
Is it ever a smooth road?

I think the biggest challenge for me that I still fight daily is insecurity – that because I do not stick thin or with rippling abs that I don’t know what I’m talking about!

I honestly think that if you suffer from any type of insecurity it’s not ‘curable’, but that you can manage it and tame it into submission.

I keep an Achievements Board on display in my home office as well as a Vision Board and look to that to see what I have accomplished in the past to keep me pushing forwards when I’m out of my comfort zone.

I also try and take the focus away from myself and think about how many people whose health I have transformed in the past, and remind myself daily that it is my purpose in life to help others. When you switch the focus to helping others it dissolves insecurities.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into your business story. Tell us more about the business.
In my private practice, and with the patients I work with in New York, I’m often people’s ‘last resort’. I never take that as an insult!

Perhaps they have tried every single diet under the sun and can’t lose weight, or struggle with gut health issues that the standard advice doesn’t help, have trouble sleeping, suffer from irregular periods or infertility, or recurring skin issues that creams and lotions do not help with.

Quite often I hear that they know something is wrong, but their doctor has said that their test results are within normal ranges, so they are unwilling to help any further.

Over the last few years, I’ve come to specialize in gut health as I really believe it is the foundation of optimum health, and because I know from personal experience the profound effect it has. I’ve focused my studies and research on the topic, and have had the privilege of learning from the top experts and doctors in the field.

Everything stems from the gut – what nutrients you absorb and don’t absorb, your body composition (lean muscle mass to body fat ratio), hormone balance, energy levels, cognitive function, ability to detoxify and health of your skin and hair.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I’m very lucky that within the health and wellbeing industry there seems to be no gender bias, or none that I have experienced so far.

However, thanks to the work of thought leaders in the field such as Gianne Doherty of W.E.L.L. Summit and Organic Bath, I am very aware of the white privilege in the wellness industry and do my best to support fellow women in wellness of all races and backgrounds through opportunities within my business.
