Conversations with the Inspiring Elle Martens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elle Martens.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a hairstylist working in the heart of the back bay. I graduated high school in 2010 and within 2 months began my journey in cosmetology school. I have always been inspired by helping others and motivating them by enhancing their self-confidence and helping them to feel beautiful, which made my career choice an easy one. My first job once I became licensed was at G2O Spa and Salon on Newbury St. as an assistant. I grew and learned relatively quickly in the salon as hair assistant and working with people both always came naturally for me. I still currently work for G2O in our brand new location at 33 Exeter Street. I am constantly pushed to be better stylists through education in and out of the salon and by my own clients. I encourage my clientele to embrace change as often as they feel comfortable. Most often, my concentration is enhancing the natural beauty of my client’s hair.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Growing up, I struggled with a lot of anxiety and depression, while also being extremely overweight. This carried into the early beginnings of my career. I was worried my social anxiety would play a large role in my life, holding me back from engaging with clientele. Lucky for me, being in the salon caused an opposite effect. Working behind the chair creating and making others feel empowered was my own form of empowerment and confidence. Within the first few years of being a stylist, I also focused on my health and lost 95lbs naturally through diet and exercise. I was able to embrace change within myself, which helped encourage those around me to find their own power and also helped my clients begin to embrace changes as well.

What should we know about Elle Coiffure? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My specialties include natural, sun-kissed balayage highlighting, contrasting ombres and enhancing natural tones with color. I also specialize in cutting curly hair with the DevaCurl hair system. I love doing hairstyling for of events, updos, and bridal work, both freelance and within the salon.

What I am most proud of in my career so far, is using my talents to serve others, and volunteering with Christophers’ Haven, visiting every few months to give complimentary haircuts to the parents staying there and to the volunteers as well. They are some of the strongest, most incredible human beings I have ever encountered, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to be in their presence whenever I am able.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I grew up in an incredibly supportive home. My family believed in everything I wanted to do and allowed me to fully express my creativity and always be myself. I grew up surrounded by extremely strong women, always showing me how to lead with confidence, love, and kindness. Without those lessons, I don’t know if I would have as great success behind the chair as I do or in many other aspects of my life and I am forever grateful.
