Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Benton.
Elizabeth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I struggled with my weight for my entire life. I was born heavy and with some metabolic deficiencies. My mother felt that my weight was a reflection on her abilities as a parent, so she put a tremendous amount of pressure on me, from a young age, to lose weight. My disordered eating habits began when I was just a child and by the time I was in my early 20s, I weighed over 350 pounds.
I was depressed and felt completely trapped in my own body, by my own choices.
I was so desperate for answers that I got my undergraduate degree in nutrition and worked in the nutrition and wellness industries. It certainly wasn’t an easy place to be as an obese woman.
Eventually, I was able to transform my life. It started with my finances – I paid off over $130,000 of debt in about 18 months – and that momentum spilled over into my personal life. Leveraging the discipline and consistency required to pay off my debt, I lost well over 100 pounds.
I wanted to use my love of teaching and public speaking to help other people who were struggling with weight and self-confidence. I wanted to create a true resource – far beyond a diet – that I *wished* had been available to me.
That’s why I started Primal Potential in 2014.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been the best learning experience of my life.
I started a blog only to realize that no one cared. I didn’t enjoy blogging and the only person reading it was my mother.
With a passion for public speaking, I decided to launch a podcast even though I didn’t know how. I Googled “How to start a podcast” and the Primal Potential podcast was live just a couple weeks later! It now has well over 5 million downloads! That decision changed the trajectory of my life and business.
My advice to other women:
“I don’t know” is simply fear talking. You can find a way. You can find an answer. You can find a resource.
Don’t resist the things you don’t know how to do. Don’t avoid starting because you don’t know where or how to begin.
Take the first step and find the first answer.
There is nothing you can’t figure out.
What should we know about Primal Potential? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in helping people create change in their lives. What often starts as a quest for weight loss is really a quest for freedom, self-control, and confidence. I think I’m most known for my podcast, Primal Potential.
What sets me apart is that I genuinely care about my clients. I am invested in their success. I don’t strive to give them answers, I strive to help them ask better questions, find their own answers, and become creative, energetic problem solvers in their own lives.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
There is nothing but opportunities! Every single setback is an opportunity to gain knowledge, experience, confidence or connections!

Hello Elizabeth I just started listening to your podcast and I truly must say I’ve never been so inspired not only lose weight but also get rid of my debt. Your pod cast have actually taught me to change my mind set and actually lose some weight as well as help me face the mundane of working out…I’m obese and desperately looking for self help! I wish I could afford your program that’s starting in fall. Hoping to budget for the next round.
