Today we’d like to introduce you to Aliseth Guevara.
Aliseth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am 20 years of age, and I was born and raised in Boston. I’ve lived in the neighborhood of Roxbury almost all of my life. To start off, I’ve had a love for make up ever since I was a young girl, I started my practice at about 14 years old. I learned watching youtube tutorials, reading articles, watching professional MUA’s do their work, even practicing on my younger brothers! My skills soon became better within the time as I started practicing on my friends, older women, elderly women, all types of skin, skin color, everything you name it! One day, while doing my friend’s makeup she popped this question to me “Hey how come you don’t promote your make up and show everyone what you can do? Make an Instagram for your make up!”. I had told her I had thoughts of making a beauty page but I was just afraid of negativity on my work. But for some reason, her idea stuck to me and I just couldn’t help but creating my page! I ended up receiving so many clients, so much love from everyone, it was amazing. I love seeing the look on each and every one of my clients faces when they get to look at themselves after I’m done with their make up. It gives me the most amazing feeling and motivation to keep doing what I’m doing and to keep my tiny business alive and create into something bigger and better everyday. My future goals are to be a makeup artist and become a business owner in my community. I want to have my own beauty salon that is specifically for make up and make up only. Every day, my work is progressing, there is always room for improvement. I am always working hard to get to where I want to be.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. The makeup industry has always been big and there are so many talented MUA’s in the world! But that doesn’t stop me from always being myself and working harder and practicing every day even if I know I am good at what I do. Always push and NEVER look back.
What should we know about your business? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I set appointments for women in my community to get their makeup done by me. I am honestly extremely proud of the work I do, I am self-taught and I think my work doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves so I will keep going until I get where I want to be and that is what sets me apart from others!
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
One of the biggest barriers I believe gets in the way of female leadership is the objectification of us.
Especially in the make up the industry, a lot of people tend to have very wrong ideas regarding makeup and women. At times, we’re treated as a Barbie doll when we’re not that.
