Check out Matt MacPherson’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt MacPherson.

Matt, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
In 2013 I was a pen-and-in artistic struggling to get attention in the Boston area. So that year I took a trip to the Grand Canyon for some hiking and artistic inspiration, taking hundreds of pictures on my iPhone 3. When I returned from the trip, I was so disappointed with their quality that I decided I needed to buy a “real” camera. The rest is history. In retrospect, it was just a matter of time for the coalescence into one medium of my three great passions: the great outdoors, art, and travel.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My photography closely reflects my personality – dark and moody. Not to say I’m an unhappy person, I’ve just always been drawn to and inspired by darkness. Almost all of my photos are of sunrises, sunsets, and twilight. I guess I’m a bit of a vampire in that I find broad daylight harsh. There’s also a meditative aspect to shooting in low and fast-changing light. It forces you to learn your gear more thoroughly and efficiently. Shooting handheld is far less technically challenging by comparison. My advice to others getting into photography is not to force a style. Learn your gear, learn your processing, and in time you will find yourself gravitating towards a certain aesthetic that also reflects your personality.

The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
There’s no shame in bringing home the bacon. Having a second job unrelated to your art and pursuing your art in your leisure time is the smartest thing you can do for yourself. There are a lot of hours in the day, you can do both.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I publish regularly on reddit, flickr, 500px, Facebook, and Instagram. Occasionally I will hang selected works in venues around Boston. My website is mattmacpherson.com. I sell prints, merchandise, and licenses there.
