Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexington , Mass.’s Fruitee yogurt.
We’d love to learn the story behind Fruitee yogurt.
Well, this opportunity to run a froyo shop came up in 2012, right around the time my youngest was about to leave for college. I saw this as an opportunity to get plugged back into Lexington and to start working again. Before college and grad school, I had worked in a traditional Taiwanese bakery and I loved it! My husband and I have always had a passion for food, and even when I was a stay-at-home mom, preparing food for my family was always one of the highlights of my day.
Successfully running a restaurant is extremely difficult. Tell us about some of the challenges you’ve had to overcome.
Location, location, location! That’s always been one of our largest challenges. Our store is located in the town center, just off of the main street so it’s easy to miss. This challenge grew when a larger chain froyo shop ended up opening on main street months after our shop did. It definitely wasn’t easy to compete with a big chain, but we doubled down on what we knew best – high quality ingredients and great customer service. But above all else, we wouldn’t have been able to overcome these challenges if it weren’t for the support of our customers. I’ve formed relationships with many of our customers, and interacting with them is one of my favorite things about running a shop.
Is there something unique or interesting about Fruitee yogurt that our readers should know about?
What makes our shop unique is the fact that it’s one of the only independently run froyo shops around. This gives us a lot of flexibility – we’re able to use our own recipes and enforce a higher standard of quality control when it comes to ingredients. We have more than 70 flavors to rotate through, and we’ve put a lot of effort into making our flavors unique. We’re especially proud of our original tart, salted caramel, chocolate hazelnut, our Greek yogurt mixes, and our very own taro and green tea (made with 100% real Japanese green tea leaves). For people with dietary restrictions, we have sugar-free and non-dairy variants of our froyo. Finally, we’re proud of our wide selection of toppings (50+ toppings), and our fresh fruit (prepared multiple times throughout the day!).
Lastly, we love providing a clean and safe environment for local high-schoolers to have their first job experiences. My own two kids worked in high school, and I know how valuable those experiences were to them and their development. I have a great job. Working with younger people and seeing happy faces all day is a great reward.
