Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Ciccone.
Brittney, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I graduated from the Fashion Institute of technology in 2012 with my BFA in Fine arts. After that I moved to Boston and went to pastry school At the Cambridge School of Culinary arts. I graduated with a professional pastry certificate and worked in Boston local bakeries for a few years. All the while still painting on the side mostly doing commissioned paintings for clients. After that I took a pause from working in kitchens to have a baby, she is almost 2 now. I started to really start pursuing my painting career in the last two years. A big step for me was when I moved into my studio in the SoWa Artist building at 450 Harrison Ave in December.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My recent work has been focusing on painting abstractly. I have a diverse body of work but use a unique lyricism that connects my paintings. One of the common themes across my paintings is how apply paint. I build up many layers leaving some past showing, creating a series of varied surfaces. Another process I use in my Faceless series is starting the paintings with my eyes closed allowing my subconscious influence my work. From those gestures left behind on the canvas I find the subject of my paintings. A large reason that I paint is in response to my life challenges. I find that my process helps me express my past through painting. I hope that when people see my work they are attracted and that their sense of time alters. Art is an expression of an intuition and a relaxation from this intuition.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
think that some of the biggest challenges that artists face today is being able to support themselves and still have the time and energy to create. There are so many talented artists in the world and with the internet there is access to all of them. New technology and websites has had both a positive and negative effects on artist.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have my studio doors open every first Friday of the month along with 200+ artists, gallery and shops in the SoWa art District. 450-460 Harrison Avenue, I’m located on the third-floor studio no.309C. I’m also in the studio working often, message me to have a studio visit.
