Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Walsh.
Samantha, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m always busy telling other people’s stories through my photography, I’m rarely telling my own! So I grew up in Central Massachusetts, I know and love the area well. My passion for photography started around 13 years old and continued to grow. We had a family friend who enjoyed photography as a hobby and was willing to teach me a few things. That passion began to grow as I went through high school! I was mostly interested in Landscape and Nature photography as I was a bit shy during childhood and my teenage years. I took classes at art museums for photography and as well as being on the high school year book committee! Now, one of the most important decisions I have made in life regarding photography was choosing to attend the New England School of Photography in Boston. They helped guide my passion into figuring out what exact type of photography I wanted to do. It was a whole new world living in Boston, much different from a small town that I grew up in! It tested my comfort levels daily, I was forced to be outgoing and meet new people! It truly molded the person that I am now. I graduated in the Spring of 2010 as a Portrait and Wedding Photographer. I was super surprised how my style and interests changed so much throughout the two years. After graduation I was slowly building my business, it got put on the back burner a bit as I married my high school sweetheart in January 2012. And had two wonderful children. Ever since then I have been working so hard at growing my business and getting my name out there.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I consider myself a portrait and wedding photographer based in New England. That being said, I like to say that I will photograph your family from the start and be there as it grows! Starting with your engagement session, wedding day, throughout having kids and watching them grow with newborn sessions, updating family portraits, up until your senior graduates high school, and even starts their own family! I am honored to be a part of these families’ lives and capturing their relationships though my photography. I use mostly natural light, and like to keep things as un-posed as possible. Natural and fun is my go-to! It’s so important to be easy going and flexible when it comes to photographing weddings and children, you just never know what can happen. It really is true when they say, “Find something that you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
With the wedding and portrait industry in Massachusetts being so competitive, it’s always a challenge to price yourself and value yourself as a photographer when their seems to be a new business popping up every day! It can be hard sometimes when you have potential clients to book with another person due to a cheaper price. But I know the clients who do book with me see my value in what I charge, because of my experience and passion in what I do. You do get what you pay for in this industry, and I provide a quality product for people to treasure for years to come!
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
One of the most important things I stress with clients is to PRINT their images I have taken. Not to have digital files site on a computer or in a desk drawer on a DVD or flash drive. Technology is outdated so quickly, but a framed print or canvas on hanging on your wall will be a timeless heirloom for your family. Walking into a client home and seeing my images printed on the wall makes my heart so happy and is such great exposure for me as well. Positive referrals and word of mouth has really helped my business grow exponentially.
