Art & Life with Paula Estey Gallery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Estey Gallery.

Paula Estey Gallery, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
As the founder and owner of Paula Estey Gallery, I come from thirty years as an artist, creativity teacher and years of producing pop-up art events from Newburyport to Boston and beyond. Four and a half years ago I opened PEG, a gallery in downtown Newburyport that represents more than twenty of our region’s finest contemporary artists. PEG also has created a presence in our community and beyond, for the support of art and artists, for bringing art awareness to our community and for expanding the base of what art galleries do into a cultural phenomenon here in Newburyport.

We have artist talks and demonstrations, curate many of our artists’ works in collaborating businesses around our area, host Chamber Music rehearsals, invented a Chefs Night Supper Club in which a chef, spirits, dessert and a new artist are featured at each one, host Climate Change discussions, Women’s Groups and Sound Healing Workshops. Our mission statement: “The mission of PAULA ESTEY GALLERY is to provide our clients and visitors with the transcendent beauty of contemporary art. In doing so, our homes, commercial spaces and communities are elevated and the quality of our lives improves.
We embrace a global range of participation for our art and artists.”

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
The artists and artwork offered here at Paula Estey Gallery is contemporary. While some of it most definitely pushes the figurative model out the window, I seek to find artists who are pushing the boundaries of their own comfort levels, while maintaining art expression that is beautiful, relatable and complex. I know my clients and my artists and my job is to put the two together in a successful and on-going relationship. Each artist that we represent brings a different take on modern expression, and it is the fine line between conceptual and figurative that we seek. First and foremost, the artwork we sell is beautiful, accomplished and highly developed. Many of our artists are mid-career and bring with them deep experience in creating art. Emerging artists–of any age–are highly sought after at PEG, when the quality is there. Our art message is vibration. Buying original art changes, the vibration of a person’s room, and that elevated energy is what we seek to create for our artists and clients.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
This is a topic of great discussion at the Gallery. It is a new world of art today. Millennials have different priorities and are purchasing art differently than through brick and mortar galleries. We are finding that our best market continues to be older than forty, even though downsizing is a challenge all retailers are facing. We believe that by continuing to showcase the finest work we can locate, excitement lives on but the biggest challenge is a kind of obsolescence in the general world of art collecting. Staying current and relevant is the biggest challenge.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
We have a brick and mortar Gallery in Downtown Newburyport! We are open by appointment ALWAYS and have regular Gallery hours Thursdays 11-6pm and Fridays and Saturdays 11-4pm. We produce more than four events a month as well, from music rehearsals by the Chamber Festival to Art Openings. Our website is active and accessible at www.paulaesteygallery.com. We are on Facebook and Instagram and write Blogs regularly.
