Art & Life with Nicholas Wainer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Wainer.

Nicholas, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born and raised in Maine with nature at my front door and a never-ending drive to explore the world around me. I got into photography as a kid when I received my first point and shoot film camera, and from there on, became so fascinated with all the different ways I could shoot ordinary, everyday things. I started to get a lot of inspiration from my mom’s work as she would teach me the various settings and nuances of using film cameras, which made me love the process even more. Over the next few years, I really learned what the phrase “gear lust” means as we upgraded through our first few digital cameras and I just couldn’t get enough. Right around this time, I built my first Desktop PC which is really when I started to bridge the gap between my creative mind and my analytical mind as I started to experiment with Photoshop and my pictures. I later fell in love with long exposures after a shutter speed assignment from photography club in high school, here is where I learned the powers and excitement of light manipulation in photos and the wonders of night photography. Over the next years, I enjoyed learning about videography by shooting videos with friends, started experimenting with portraits more than ever, and with all the technological advancements flying a decent camera around in the sky via drone. Now, I am actively working to combine all of these crafts that I’ve learned over the years and output content that makes people take a second thought and wonder what is beyond.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Currently, I mainly do photography with a focus on colorful nature landscapes, long exposure star-trails, moody urban cities, and depthy portraits. I try to combine as many of these mediums into one piece to make something that people haven’t seen before. Sometimes, I spend hours manipulating multiple of my photos together to create a unique universe that someone could escape away into. One thing that really gave my art “new heights” this past year was getting my first DJI drone; this new view on the world flooded my mind with ideas and gave me a new creative perspective to express myself with. My goal with my work is to make anyone take a second take, look a little deeper into what’s going on in the composition, and make them dream a little from it. I express myself through photography not only because it makes me happy, but because the community surrounding it is so loving and driving. The creative community motivates and supports me with my photography and I only ever hope to spread that same feeling to others to grow everyone together.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
To me, success is doing something that you love and makes you happy, even in times when you are trenching through the mud to achieve your goal. I find myself always gravitating towards things in which I enjoy the entire process; and the end result, my success, is simply the fact that I accomplished something I wanted to achieve. The success and exposure that comes after my inner success just drive me to want to continue my craft and perfect it even more. Don’t get me wrong, I love when people gratify me for the work that I have done, but I feel the essential piece of success is knowing it yourself and projecting that like a bright star for everyone to see. Never hold back on showing your work, enjoy the entire process, and really make people see how much you love what you do as an artist.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can catch most of my work on my Instagram, I try to keep up with posting daily and sharing all the new styles and effects I am working to master. I have been uploading a little to YouTube as well to provide a more behind the scenes look into different adventures and the creative process. Over the years, I have also created a plethora of websites that host a variety of photos, videos, and music that I’ve created; I’ve even made a little shop for various products with my pictures on them.
