Art & Life with Laurel Greenfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurel Greenfield.

Laurel, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I paint food because I love exploring the memories, traditions, and nostalgic moments we’ve all experienced sharing food with people we love around the table.

I’ve had an affinity for painting my whole life but started focusing on food paintings just before heading to college. I opted not to go to art school and ended up at Boston University studying Hospitality Administration. I still painted all throughout college, sitting on the floor of my dorm room painting ice cream and cupcakes. I knew I was painting food for a reason, but I couldn’t really articulate what that reason was.

After college, I enrolled in the Gastronomy program at BU which was all about food studies. It was in that program that I learned how big of a role food plays in not only our memories, but also our identities. What we eat (and who we share it with) is who we are.

I’ve been painting food ever since, painting my own food memories and capturing other people’s in commissions.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I paint with acrylics usually on canvas. I create vibrantly colored paintings of different foods. I’m inspired by the foods that evoke memories from a special place in time. I love hearing the stories behind people’s favorite food memories.

I love when people see my work and it immediately reminds them of a story from their childhood or makes them think about a special moment they shared with a beloved grandparent. Our food memories are so personal and special and I want anyone who sees my work to be reminded of the happiest moments around their table.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Focus on why you do what you do and find people whose values align with yours. Set aside even small amounts of time to focus on your creative projects and just keep going!
