Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Dempsey.
Kyle, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up along the Westfield River in Western Mass, skipping rocks, fishing, and building forts. After graduating from Johnson & Wales with a degree in creative advertising, I began freelancing, creating photo and video content that captures the essence of how I grew up for major brands all over the world. I grew my Instagram page to 400,00+ followers and have created advertisements for Land Rover, Samsung, Nature Valley, Samuel Adams, Cape Cod Chips and many more. At age 26, I’m starting my own creative agency in Western Mass with a mission to tell authentic stories for brands and small businesses alike.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My main goal is to create art that makes people feel something. It’s usually the warm sensation of peace and contentment. A lot of my photos are of cozy scenarios in cabins or unusual spaces with the goal of making the viewer feel like they’re there. I also have an affection for old vehicles and use them a lot in my imagery. I believe that simple and raw will always rule over fancy gimmicks. My favorite medium to create in is video. I love combining visuals, music, and voice to transport the viewer to a different dimension. To me, it is the ultimate form of expression with the ability to use both visual and sonic elements.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
There have never been more opportunities for artists with the explosion of social media and digital sharing spaces. You no longer need Hollywood in order to reach a million eyeballs. The playing field has completely leveled. That being said, it’s easy to lose touch in the physical forms of art, such as a print as opposed to an Instagram post or going to the movies as opposed to watching YouTube on your couch. The more physical art experiences we can keep alive, the better.
