Art & Life with Kelsey Montague

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Montague.

Kelsey, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was raised in an artist family. My Mom, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa are/were all artists. I have been drawing since I can remember. A few years ago, after living in New York City, I had the opportunity to paint a rotating art wall. I decided to do wings. I wanted people to step in front of the piece and become a living work of art. I also assigned a hashtag to the piece, #WhatLiftsYou, to encourage people to share pictures and to give them the opportunity to mention online what lift them up in their own life. Those wings were immediately successful and then Taylor Swift stood in front of them and they became even more popular!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I focus on large-scale, street art pieces. All of my work is interactive. I want people to be able to stand in front of my pieces and look like they are part of the art. I want people to become ‘living works of art.’ Most of my pieces also have the #WhatLiftsYou hashtag on them. This tag has become a campaign, dedicated to ‘lifting people up’ and to providing people a chance to reflect online about what is most important to them.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I think that joining art festivals and fairs is a great way to meet other artists.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I keep an updated list of my work on my interactive map here:
