Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Murtaugh.
Kate, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
For more than two decades, I’ve proudly built a strong foundation for event planning and design. As a child, I watched my parents create world class events all over the world for my father’s company. I was always so inspired and loved watching them put the details and logistics in place. In high school, I jumped at the chance to help manage weddings and events at a local country club in my hometown of Westerly, Rhode Island. I think that’s when I knew I had a passion and love for events that could take me into a career.
Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of managing events for a Boston-based magazine publisher; at a popular Rhode Island wedding venue; and for numerous corporate, non-profit, and higher education clients including Harvard Business School and Boston College—where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and Business Management.
As a proud New England native and a former marketing professional with a keen eye for design, I always felt that I could—and, more importantly, should—do more with my talents and passions. After poring—and slightly obsessing— over the details, personalization, and design of my own coastal wedding, I decided to take a leap of faith and launched Kate Murtaugh Events & Design in 2015—a true extension of my heart.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am wedding planner and event designer inspired by love, design and the art of creating events. Our team specializes in bespoke wedding and event planning designed around each individual client’s unique story and taste. We take great pride in providing our clients with an amazing and exciting design and planning experience from the moment of our first consultation to the very last sparkler exit and dance.
We combine logistics, design and our relationships with experienced and talented vendors to ensure our events are not only orchestrated flawlessly and beautifully, but also a gorgeous representation of the love and happiness at the heart of the celebration.
We absolutely love what we do and derive absolute satisfaction from translating the unique personalities of our clients into personalized, breathtaking and love-filled events. We believe in seamless collaboration and taking the time to truly understand what every couple wants in their planning process. Our strengths lie in our ability to truly listen to each client as well as our dedication to producing events and designs that we believe are true works of art.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
For the wedding industry, I think its less change caused by world events and social issues but more social change caused by the evolution of social media. Social media and its many platforms and pretenses have forever changed the world of weddings. Images and inspiration for today’s weddings are no longer limited to what one sees in a magazine or on a television program. Now, the images are everywhere: on mobile phones, tablets, laptops. Today, the bevvy of information and inspiration is limitless.
The hard part that we’ve all found is that social media allows for brides and grooms to see other weddings and love what they are seeing without realizing the time and money it actually took to create the look. Unfortunately, there are so many unrealistic expectations that people now have for their day that they might not be able to afford, or won’t have the time to create. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t browse the web to storm up ideas for your big day, but it’s important to keep in mind your own limitations—which are totally okay to have and not to compare yourself to others. When we work with our couples, it’s imperative for our team to work with the couple to make their wedding their own and unique to their own beautiful love story.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can see our work in a number of places including on our website and across social media. We’re honored to have been featured in a number of high profile publications around the country.
