Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Kennedy.
Kat, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Although I always felt a deep connection with music, I grew up with terrible stage fright and never thought I would become a musician. I was preparing to apply to college for science my junior year of high school when at a school talent show something clicked: as scary as it was, I realized I loved the rush of performing and slowly became more certain that I wanted to pursue music seriously. I knew I had to work past my stage fright and play catch up if I wanted to make music my career. I practiced, pushed myself to perform as much as I could, and was accepted to Berklee College of Music in 2011. I worked tirelessly to learn all the things I had missed by being self-taught and starting late in the game. I quickly learned that songwriting was my passion, and I loved learning the nuances behind writing a great song. I met so many incredible teachers and peers who encouraged me and inspired me, and from there I set out with the goal to make music my full-time job out of college. When I graduated in 2015, several opportunities presented themselves that have taken me on a journey playing my songs across America. It has been an incredible adventure that has brought me from Alaska to Brazil and across the country several times.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I sing and play guitar and I have experimented with writing and performing a variety of genres. “It has been a journey to establish my current pop and singer/songwriter sound. “Finding just the right blend of the acoustic and electronic instruments has been a fun challenge. I am very grateful for the talented producers who have helped me shape that sound, such as Josh Friedman, who produced my upcoming album “Drifting”. I try to write songs that are honest in the hopes that listeners might be able to relate to my experiences as well. I find it very cathartic to write, and when I perform those songs there’s nothing better than seeing people connect to the emotions in the lyrics.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Art is and always will be more essential than I think any of us realize. Although times are tumultuous, I’m not sure there’s ever been a time when things weren’t. That’s why the artist’s role continues to be to push boundaries of the norm, to express when it’s difficult to express and to connect when it feels like there’s not much in common.
