Art & Life with Dee Dee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Dee.

Dee, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was moved to make art very young. I was always drawing. years ago, I was inspired very much by UK collage artist, Linder. Linder was known for making artwork for The Buzzcocks among many others. Collage spoke to me in a way other art didn’t. I enjoyed making new things from old things. Juxtaposing. Making new meanings.

I began putting work out in public as I loved to decorate the city and share them, as if they are little surprises left for people who they may resonate with.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create collages with imagery from everywhere. I collect it, and put it together to tell a story… I like my art to tell a story and to be able to draw the viewer in to that story. I get lots of fan mail from people who say my work has made their day or has gotten them thru a hard time, I can’t ask for much more than that. I think of my work as dreams I can bring into the waking world. Dreams I have but if others love them to then that is just the cherry on top.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Being an artist can certainly be lonely, but connecting with other artists is so easy now with the internet and things like Instagram. I think nothing of writing artists I admire and I have some very valuable friendships with some now because of it.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Most people can come across my work in the wild in New York City where I live, or in Asbury Park, New Jersey where I spend quite a bit of time. I put work out into the streets for people to enjoy often, and last year I did a mural on the boardwalk in Asbury Park overnight one evening which is still there. For “inside” work that can be purchased I deal with a few galleries now but mostly thru Parlor Gallery in Asbury Park.

People can support my work by buying prints. I release numbered silk screened hand spray painted print editions a few times each year. Each is always a bit unique and it gives someone a chance to live with one in their own home as opposed to finding me on a wall or in an alley where I am quite ephemeral.
