Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Chesko.
Chad, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born and raised in Florida, a latchkey kid with an interest in art. I was heavily influenced by 80s skate and surf art, heavy metal magazine and Saturday morning cartoons like thundarr the barbarian, the hurculoids and a dash of Kung fu theatre.
My earliest thoughts to my fascination with tattooing were primal. Tattooing was always in my view with the many bikers and toughs around my neighborhood as a young man. My family was opposed to the idea which only added to its mysterious call.
Starting with poking in punk designs with a sewing needle, I later graduated to a jailhouse-style machine introduced to me by one of the older kids in my new neighborhood, where we moved when my father remarried. Then, on to work professionally in 1994.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a tattooer of 24 years. Traditionally trained. I am self-taught art wise (drawing, painting illustrating).
In my tattooing, I try to bring a fresh and unique voice to powerful familiar images and mix cultural motifs with highly imaginative ideas from the future and days long past. Mysterious and visceral.
I enjoy tattooing the Japanese style as well as biomechanical, traditional American and tribal.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Artists are societies healers. The artists that have no choice but are compelled to create, whatever medium that may be. A filtration system of the absurd. They are grounding.
