Art & Life with Caitlin Bingham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Bingham.

Caitlin, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m from a small town in Vermont that is filled with creative and eclectic souls. From an early age, I was encouraged to embrace my creative side and let my imagination run wild. As I got older and became more serious about art as a career, I took private art lessons from Adelaide Tyrol, a natural history illustrator, painter, and a mural and backdrop designer for Oliphant Studios in New York City. It was Adelaide who turned me on to my love of painting and I often reference her work for inspiration.

I have a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in painting from the New Hampshire Institute of Art and I am currently living on Martha’s Vineyard. I am a painter as well as a floral designer for Morrice Florist. My job as a floral designer uses much more of my art degree than I ever thought it would and allows me to work with my hands all day; which is a huge bonus for any artist. Being a floral designer is extremely innovative often involving a lot of quick thinking and problem-solving. It’s a rewarding job that generally fuels my vision in the painting studio. I am regularly generating color palettes for my next painting from the flowers I am using at the florist.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a painter. I work primarily with oils and have a traditional approach to my paintings involving layering and glazing. It is a rare occasion if I finish a painting in one sitting. My work can be recognized by the saturated color and thick glossy medium applied to the paint. I love bright color which is why I choose to work with oil paint because oils produce a much more saturated hue. My paintings are a direct representation of the scenery and landscape that I am immersed in. My current work is much more surreal, illustrating a renewed perspective to the smaller details within a landscape. Through mindful observation of nature and a focus on shape and color, my work captures emotion through an abstraction of the natural world. I want my viewers to look deeper within the landscape, beyond the surface, to a random moment within where they can find a deeper understanding of life. The process of painting is a way for me to find that connection, it’s an attempt to interact with the unnoticed.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
Being an artist has become one of life’s most challenging tasks. Although, I believe that in the world of social media life for artists has become easier, keyword being easier, not easy by any means. Having affordable studio spaces and a place for artists to gather and create together is the most important tool for a thriving arts community. I myself thrive on connection, being connected to other local artists is the best way to get inspired. If you asked any artist what they missed most about art school the response would be just that, the connection and community of artists living, breathing, sleeping art.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work can be seen through private studio tours/consultations which can be set up via email, caitlin@caitlinbingham.com. Or at the Grey Barn and Farm stand on Martha’s Vineyard.
