Art & Life with Bernard Carver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernard Carver.

Bernard, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
After spending the first twenty years of his life in Beirut, Bernard Carver settles in Paris, where he chooses a profession that would allow him to express his love for literature, leaving time to develop his artistic talent.

A literary lover and book merchant, so called “bouquiniste”, Carver starts experimenting with painting his surroundings; all the great monuments of the capital visible from his stand in St Germain-des-Pres area of Paris’ left bank.

His experiments soon lead to an unusual use of materials and a play on layering of image. Paris is often sketched in impressionist style pastels then cover by acrylic painted tree-leaves. This intriguing contrast of technique and subject matter add a sense of mystery to Carver’s work, which is further developed through the use of florescent paint and light. The vivid colors of his canvases spark to life in dark spaces giving an illusion of illumination from within.

His work has been exhibited at the Salon du Louvre, le Grand Palais, Live Love Atlanta, the Molly Markoff Foundation Boston and numerous exhibitions worldwide.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My passion for art started at a very early age. My father was an amateur who was able to paint many of the modern paintings. That inspired me to follow his path and I have painted ever since. My style has evolved over the years, with the different countries I have lived in and the many wonderful people I have met.

I am now known as the artist with the “Black Light”, as my paintings transformed from natural daylight to other vibrant colors with the black light. I believe the light is the mother of all the colors and I honor it through my paintings as many other colors are discovered with it. In effect, each painting represents the current moment with the daylight and many other places with the black light.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Yes, being an artist can be very lonely, but there is also a Zen attitude. Opening up to other artists makes that experience much more fulfilling.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can view my work in several galleries around the world (Boston, New York, Atlanta, Paris, Milan, London, etc..) but much easier through a couple of websites http://galerie-vendome.com/bernard-carver/,
