Meet Zach Hagopian and Jon Kazarian of Accelevents in Back Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Hagopian and Jon Kazarian.

Jon and Zach, please share your story with us.
Jon and I first met about 15 years ago during the summer on the Cape. Our families have been friends since then, and Jon and I have always enjoyed hosting large gatherings/parties on the Cape during the summer. About four years ago, we decided to take this passion into the fall by organizing the first of our annual fundraising event, the Boston Fall Formal. This is an event that hosts around 1,000 young professionals, with all proceeds donated to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

For our first event, we wanted to include a silent auction or raffle, but knew it would be difficult to manage with so many attendees. We looked for a better mobile or online option, but could not find anything remotely near our price range. Instead, we had a friend build a very basic system that let us run the auction with text message bidding. The auction was a huge success, and was the inspiration for Accelevents.

Now, we offer mobile and online silent auctions, raffles, and donation pages. This past year, we’ve launch a full event ticketing platform that integrates with our fundraising solutions.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, the ride has been fairly smooth. Our main challenge was finding the right fit in the market. As hosts of our own fundraiser, we were confident in the need for our product, but the key was in our pricing. Rather than charging very high prices and only appealing to the largest events, we made a somewhat difficult decision to have the lowest prices in the industry, assuming that the volume of events we could work with would grow. The decision paid off, and we’ve been growing steadily since!

Please tell us about Accelevents.
Accelevents is an event ticketing and mobile fundraising platform.

On the event ticketing side, we offer full event ticketing capabilities, including:
– Custom ticket creation
– Online ticket sales and registration
– Easy check in

Our ticketing solution integrates with our fundraising solutions, which include mobile silent auctions, raffles, and donation pages.

With our mobile silent auctions, users can:
– Submit bids via a fundraising webpage unique to the fundraiser
– Submit bids via text message
– Users receive instant notifications when they are outbid or have won an item, and can checkout directly from their mobile device

Our Raffles allow users to purchase digital tickets from their mobile device or from a volunteer. Users can then submit their tickets digitally, and will be notified if they have won an item.

Finally, our donation function lets donors submit donations online or via text message (text to give).

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memories are the years I’ve spent with my family on Cape Cod growing up. We have a home right on Pleasant Bay in Harwich, allowing us to explore the islands and beaches around Harwich and Chatham. Spending summers on the Cape definitely were a huge part of my life, as I still try to get back there as often as possible every summer now. This is also where I met Jon, my current co-founder and business partner.
