Today we’d like to introduce you to Will O’Connell.
Will, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am the General Manager of The Waterclub at Marina Bay. I started working at Marina Bay in my teens bussing tables and then bartended through college. Upon graduation, my uncle gave me a chance to start managing and taught me the operational and financial side of the business. I found I had a passion for food and beverage and I began to grow the business to what it is today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I first started in management I found it took a few years to foster relationships with patrons, staff and vendors. As the new kid on the block I had to earn their respect through honesty and hard work. I am a man of my word which has allowed me to create a great staff base, partnerships with industry vendors and a loyal fan base. I feel my business adds value to the community and I pride myself on producing a quality product. This came with many years of listening to the neighboring residents and patrons of Marina Bay.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Waterclub is a two story waterfront bar/restaurant with spectacular views of Boston. We operate seasonally and host a nightclub Thursdays – Sundays from Memorial Day to Labor Day. We are also a fully staffed year round function facility for private and corporate events. The summertime music and bustling excitement at our waterfront bar has made The Waterclub a favorite spot on the boardwalk. Whether it’s an afternoon out with friends and family, a bite to eat during a lunch break, or partaking in a relaxing day of sipping cocktails, a holiday party or just people watching The Waterclub has an atmosphere that caters to all! Our delicious food, signature collection of cocktails and stellar service are unmatched!
What were you like growing up?
As the oldest child I have always been mature, responsible, and reliable. My Dad is a big believer in discipline, structure, integrity and hard work. When I wasn’t in school, I was playing hockey and if I wasn’t playing a sport I was working. This has followed me into my adult life. The restaurant business requires long hours and dedication. Weekends and Holidays are often spent at my business keeping watch over all facets of the operation.
