Meet Trailblazer Lawni Hamilton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawni Hamilton.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lawni. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, I’ve been officially in the hair business for over 25 years now, but it wasn’t a quest of mine at first. A family member taught me how to barber as a kid which blew my world at how good he was! All I wanted to do is have fresh fade for school to be popular with the girls! Lol, my mom wasn’t having any of it thou, was too expensive and it wasn’t a priority for her. So, I followed my cousin around until I got it!

I’m an artistic type so I got it quick and love doing designs for me and my friends growing up. Later on, I had many friends who told me I should become a barber but wasn’t really interested in the thought until I drove a good friend and her cousin to enlist in hair school. She talked me into checking out the place and I was interested after a talk with smooth talking Mr. Melo! He had me thinking I could do anything in the business! lol, I’m glad he did cause I’ve been doing it ever since!

The lesson I learned from that is not everyone will be at the end of your journey, but sometimes, they are there to nudge you in a direction or experience you wouldn’t think to try.🤷🏾‍♂️ I love my job, meeting new people and building relationships while making changes in lives is amazing! It’s like giving someone a present and watching them open it right in front of you! Pretty sweet! It also allows me to be creative to learn new techniques and keeps me young! Lol, Not a bad gig…

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, but I must say I’ve been very lucky and had great mentoring! I would tell anyone looking to get into the field to make sure they assist in a salon that has good teachers and training! You must absorb as much as possible don’t just do ask questions! The knowledge is why you’re going to get %*@# pay! Lol!

What are you most known for?
I’m probably known for my color and haircuts! I’m into hair care so I want to give you the look as long as your hair can handle it! I seem to get a lot of brunettes “I want to be platinum and still have healthy shiny hair, is that do-able?!” I try to make that happen for them, and I think I am able to because I know textures and What products to use.

From tight curly hair to fine straight blondes I do it! That’s what probably sets me apart, I know a lot of stylists that can’t or won’t do both… I mean I’m a hair stylist that’s what we’re supposed to do right?!🤷🏾‍♂️

Who have you been inspired by?
Well, I get my artistic hand from my mom, I’d watch her draw and then later oil paint the finish, that amazed me! That something that was in your mind, you could put to paper. My wife who is a serial encourager of my work!

I totally don’t believe it sometimes, like I have to ask someone else! Lol, I’d also say, my clients. It’s funny before getting into the business I don’t think I had many women as friends, but when you meet someone and see their struggle through college, struggle relationships, struggle threw finding how they want to be successful. Awwww!

But then they graduate, they marry have kids and they get that promotion or start their own business, well then your kind of locked in with them, yeah know! Lol!
