Meet Trailblazer Kathryn Morrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Morrell.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In November 2016, I quit my job in the retail industry to spend more time with my boys and provide the consistency that we so craved. As a mother, I understand how precious our time is, and with so much on our plates, thinking about ourselves often comes in the last place. With over a decade of experience in the fashion industry working for numerous luxury retailers including Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Prada, Burberry and Christian Dior, I was privileged enough to attend countless trunk shows, product meetings, fit sessions and work with thousands of clients. Through this experience, I have learned how to create cultivated looks. Knowing when and how to use proportion, color, texture and detail in concert together can be tricky. I love sharing industry secrets teaching you how to construct killer outfits with ease. I also teach the Sweatpants & Stilettos readers how to mix luxury with affordability and invest or save, when necessary.

Has it been a smooth road?
Blogging has been a true lesson in trial and error. With no previous experience in this arena, the technical aspect has been the most challenging. Google is my best friend.

Conversely, finding content to write about has been fluid and organic. With over a decade of experience in the fashion industry, I am truly passionate about helping people discover their best self through a personal presentation, I could talk about fashion 24/7. The site has been well received and followers in the S & S community have guided me to what they are interested in reading by reaching out and asking questions.

We’d love to hear more about Sweatpants & Stilettos.
The blog Sweatpants & Stilettos is a personal shopper’s guide to elevating personal style. The site provides guidance to women going through that incredibly difficult time of motherhood, when their size, lifestyle and tastes change. The site provides them with styling advice and streamlines their choice by providing stylish and sensible outfits to serve their busy lifestyle. I am most proud of the fact that the website provides the mother with an opportunity to self-nurture and think about her own needs again. What sets me apart is over a decade in the fashion and retail industry. Over the years, I have worked with thousands of clients and attended countless product training and fit sessions. What always drove me was the ability to connect with clients and now I get to share my knowledge with a broader audience.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I guess you can say it all started when I was around 7 or 8. Carefully tucked under the foot of my bed, like a treasure box, was an overstuffed Caboodles kit. Each layer was filled with all types of earrings. Some small, some large, most shiny, vibrant color always a strong theme, but there was one pair that begged to be taken out each time. They were jungle green with a carefully hand painted parrot, strangely reminiscent of Toucan Sam. If they sound hideous, I promise you they looked worse, but to me they were magic. I can’t remember how many times I held them up to my ears in the mirror, but when I did it was transformative. Suddenly, I was Gloria Estefan rolling down A1A in a white convertible with the wind blowing my thick dark hair (a twisted bath towel).

Thankfully, my mother made me wait until I was 13, before I was allowed to get my ears pierced, so I outgrew those beauties before they ever saw hang time. However, my affinity towards that transformative piece remained. Fortunately, my taste has evolved (and refined) over time but my love of a perfectly tailored blazer or the right shade of red lipstick is still a transcendent experience. Fashion and beauty should do just that, allow us to evoke the best version of ourselves and exude confidence with every step and flip of the hair. Sweatpants & Stilettos is a busy girl’s guide to styling, fashion and beauty.
