Meet Tony Porter of Five6teen Photography in Franklin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Porter.

Tony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It basically started when I purchased my first DSLR camera with a couple of lenses from a friend back in 2008. It was at that point that I realized that could start capturing beautiful images. I started taking pictures of landscapes, portraits and trying different things just trying to get better at taking photos. During this time I developed an affinity for taking portraits, especially of my kids. As I got better, my friends and family began asking me to do portraits for them and eventually I got asked to help with a wedding. I soon started to do small weddings on my own. Nearly two years later, I decided to take my hobby more seriously and began a part-time photography business and Five6teen Photography was born. I’ve been running the business ever since.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No. As with any new business, it requires lots of time, effort, and resources to get things going. It has been difficult since I have a full-time job, family, and other responsibilities. As the owner, especially with any start-up, one is required to wear many hats and I can’t just focus on being behind the lens. There are other aspects of the business that need tending to, such as marketing, keeping up with social media, training, accounting, etc. I tried a stint at going full-time but had to return to running it part-time after one year.

It’s not where I would like it to be at this point, but I continue to plug away at it. I do see growth each year in all aspects, which inspires me to keep at it.

Please tell us about Five6teen Photography.
Five6teen Photography specializes in wedding, high school senior and family portraits. My focus is to make clients feel relaxed, special, and have a great experience. At the end of the day, it’s about creating relationships while helping people. That’s what I love to do.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t do anything differently. I’ve learned a lot along the way.
