Today we’d like to introduce you to Toni Gilardi.
Toni, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Boston’s Historic North End. I am 3rd generation Italian/American and have always been proud to call the North End my home. I started selling real estate at the age of 18, after I decided to leave Suffolk University and quickly moved up in the ranks becoming the manager of Bostonian Realty within 6 months. By the age of 20/21, I opened my first real estate company in 1987 “Landmark Realty” where I learned how to run a business the hard way but my way. At the time, there were only a few agencies in the neighborhood and due to my local status I built a very successful business. Being so young, I really didn’t understand the magnitude of a market crash or recession, but boy did I learn fast. Around the age of 26 I felt it necessary to go back to school and finish my degree. From there, I continued to get my MBA. All the time, working 7 days a week to accommodate my clients. At one point, I was contacted by HGTV to film an episode of House Hunters. Evidently they thought I was smart, funny and very knowledgeable so they booked me on several other shows (my house is worth what? and National open house). In 2008, I merged Landmark Realty with Elite Boston Realty, the owner just happened to be a good friend from the North End Maria Ditullio. We rocked the neighborhood. In 2014, Maria passed away from surgery complications. It was a very sad and unsettling time so, I made the decision to merge with Gibson Sotheby’s and here I sit today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe I briefly touched on most of these issues. But, the biggest obstacle was my age and inexperience however, learning from the ground up allowed for an expansive knowledge as did a formal education! It was difficult, to manage work and school but this is what shaped me to the person I am today.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Gilardi Group | Gibson Sotheby’s International Realty – what should we know?
I started out as a sales agent selling mostly small condos to first time home buyers. When the market crashed in 1988, I got into rentals to survive and was extremely successful and very busy. At one point, managing 100’s of units for land lords ranging from individual owners to multi-building owners. As the market slowly returned to normal I quickly learned how to convert these rentals into sales. Be it the tenant or the land lord or both, I made deals all day long. At one point, selling multi-unit buildings became the wave and there, I was now selling 4-10 unit buildings. Now, growing to complexes and developments. Keep in mind, I didn’t have a mentor I just saw it happening, jumped in and learned as I went along. From there, I dabbled in commercial.
I became known as the condo and building Queen of the North End. The “go to” “know all” North End connection. I became very active in the neighborhood and was elected to the North End Waterfront Counsel and VP of the Chamber of Commerce.
What I am most proud of and can honestly say, I have never sold anyone a bad deal. I have always had fair and mutually beneficial relationships with my clients. I have always gone above and beyond for my clients and help anyone I can. (sometimes, I do more favors then work I get paid for doing). My clients, customers and family know they can rely on me to always be there for them. These are the attributes that have set me apart and the reason I still have the same clients I’ve had for over 30 years. Feel free to read my reviews on Zillow!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Yes , of course. No man is an island especially in this industry. I give a ton of credit to my previous agents as I would have never been able to handle all the rentals without their assistance. To my family and neighbors that have known me since I was born and trusted me with their properties. To my dear friend and business partner, Maria DiTullio who has since passed on, who made me laugh every day! To all of my loyal clients and customers, who would never think about using anyone else and will only refer their friends and family to me! And to some of my associates in this very difficult industry that have opened doors and allowed me first entry into hot properties.
Since, I have joined Gibson Sotheby’s and Founded The Gilardi Group I shout-out to my team, Lauren Newton and Caroline Stankus, who have been wonderful in bring me up to speed with social media and marketing. They are also fabulous with my land lords and are a tremendous help during rental season. As The Gilardi Group grows they will assume more responsibilities in sales.
I am extremely blessed!
