Meet Tim Russo of Wireguided

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Russo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tim. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was 11 my parents used their savings to buy me a Commodore 64. Looking back I am not sure how they could afford it but I will always be grateful. From that one act, I was hooked on computers and technology. I would read every book I could, taught myself how to program, and built my own computer.

After high school, I left New York and went to Northeastern University and received a Computer Science degree. I graduated during the dot-com boom and enjoyed a great time working in networking and security for various companies. After a few years of being a millionaire on paper, the whole thing came to an abrupt end when the dot-com bust hit.

After the crash, I found myself out of a job for the first time. With nothing to lose, I decided to start my own business. My lucky break came when my girlfriend (now wife) received a call from her cousin asking if I could help their organization with some tech issues. That was 17 years ago and I haven’t looked back.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning your own business means constant ups and downs. I started Wireguided after I was laid off from my job.

Going from a high paying position to unemployment overnight was tough. I like to joke with my wife that I lost my job, my car, and my hair all in the same month. The funny thing is that lessons learned from hardships and failures are the most valuable. Those lessons proved critical to my company’s success.

Wireguided – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Wireguided is a managed IT services business. What that means in non-nerd is that we perform the tasks of an in-house IT department for a fraction of the cost. We provide our clients with services from the help desk, networking, and servers to infrastructure and business planning. We specialize in working with organizations of all sizes to make sure their technology allows them to achieve their business goals.

Wireguided was one of the first IT companies to charge a flat monthly rate instead of hourly. Unlike most (if not all) of our competitors, we have no contracts, no travel time charges, or any hidden fees. One flat rate based on the number of systems supported. That’s it. We provide unlimited onsite and remote support.

Everything is included from employee training to security audits. What I am most proud of is our 92% retention rate. We love what we do and we treat all our clients as partners.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I was asked to travel to West Africa to provide security training for various government agencies from across the continent. I got to meet professionals from different cultures and assist them in making their countries a little more secure from cyber threats. It also allowed me to work with members of the FBI.
