Meet Tara Levesque-Vogel of Levesque Dentistry in Nashua

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Levesque-Vogel.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Nashua. My father, grandfather and uncles were dentists. As a teenager, I worked with my father doing everything from landscaping to cleaning toilets. I ended up dental assisting in the summers as I tried to decide what I wanted to do with my life. I loved art and design so I decided I would go to college for Interior Design. I still assisted my father on my breaks from school which led me to meet a dental hygienist who told me how fulfilling her job was. I decided to end my design career and go to school for Dental Hygiene. At first, I did feel like I wasted my time on an art degree at my first college but later realized having this art background added something special in my career. After hygiene school, I worked for my father and I realized that if I became a dentist, I could take over my father’s wonderful dental practice. So this I did.

I’ve been out of dental school for 16 years now. A lot has happened. My brother, a mechanical engineer, decided to also go to dental school. We practice together in Nashua, NH. My father has since retired. It’s a true dental dynasty. We are a good team with my art background and his engineering. Dentistry requires an understanding of physics, art and good visual abilities which we both have.

When I first began in the dentistry world, I was a young female among many older men. It was hard to fit in and at times, I lacked self-confidence. Dental schools are now made up of at least 50% women so the times are changing. Six years ago I decided to expand myself by taking a governor appointed position for the NH Board of Dental Examiners. Again, it was a lot of older men on the board. I still lacked some self-confidence when I first started with the board. I remember my first day thinking I could never take on a bigger position on this board. But here I am in my second year as the president. You never know what you can do until you try. I have since taken on positions nationally with the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments and the American Board of Dental Examiners where I hold a position in their House of Representatives.

I am very fortunate to have such wonderful family and friends who have encouraged me to be the best I can be. I look back now on my original love for art and design and I realize what I do every day as a dentist is an art form. I’m truly in the place I should be!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have two teenage boys. My struggles have been trying to juggle a family and a career which has been difficult but it has built my character and made me stronger. I want to be an example to these boys that hard work pays off and once you find your goals and passions, you can get through any challenge.

Levesque Dentistry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Levesque Dentistry is my business with my brother, Keith. My grandfather started in 1938 in Nashua and my father practiced with him for many years. We still have many of my father and grandfather’s patients, which is very special to us. We are proud of the fact that we are family owned and operated. There is no corporate company making the decisions. We pride ourselves in quality and spending a lot of time with our patients. We feel that is important in a field where there are so many people with dental phobias. We also have an amazing team who has the same vision that we do.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is finding joy in what I do, whether it is professionally or personally. It’s really important to me to have gratitude and appreciation and with that comes success. It’s also important for me to be genuine. Surrounding myself with amazing people that help me grow and flourish, adds to that success.
