Meet Supriya Shekar of The Naan-Americans- A boutique store for culinary experiences

Today we’d like to introduce you to Supriya Shekar.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Supriya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in India, I have the best memories of food tasting from our neighbor’s kitchen, and for some reason, food served in other’s kitchen was not only different and unique but always told me a story of the family living there. From roots of their ethnicity to culture and tradition, kindness and generosity to humility and grandeur. It was indeed my first food experience as a kid trying new cuisines in culturally rich Indian neighborhoods.

“The Naan-Americans” is an extension of my experiences as a child to American soil, where we bring people together through food and enlighten them with history, culture, and traditions, bridging the gap of knowledge on diversity around us.

Has it been a smooth road?
It is definitely not been an easy road, however with my amazing team (Anjana Chennagiri, Co-Founder and Swati Gahlaut, Vice President of Business Development), we haven’t stopped having fun since we started! It has been a journey of learning, thinking and creating amazing events that we as a parent, friend or a wife would love to do during our precious spare time.

Our biggest struggle is to make people feel comfortable going to host’s private kitchens for cooking showcase and tasting experience. Just like Airbnb, any new set-up takes time for people to feel comfortable. Hence, during this transition of their mindset, we introduced farms, pop-ups and other public venues for people to attend classes more freely. Our other biggest struggle is reaching wider audiences with a limited budget, and we thank Boston Voyager for recognizing what we do and help spread the word.

We are always looking for ways to collaborate with people or products who resonated with our mission. We are also in talks with several non-profit organization to help raise funds via our platform.

What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
While working for a couple of ventures in the scientific industry, I learned that where there is no passion there is no will, and where there is a will there is luck!

I think the biggest challenge an entrepreneur faces is finding the dream team with passionate people. I feel I have been lucky enough to have found people who enjoy working for The Naan-Americans as much as I do.
