Today we’d like to introduce you to Sue Goganian.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sue. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Historic Beverly is the new name of the Beverly Historical Society, which has been caring for, and sharing, Beverly’s history for more than 100 years. We own 3 historic properties: the 17th c. Balch House, which was the site of one of Beverly’s first European settlers, Hale Farm, originally owned by John Hale, first minister of Beverly and a key figure in the Salem witchcraft era, and the 1781 Cabot House, home to merchant and privateer owner John Cabot and now a museum of Beverly history.
Our vast collection of objects and documents illustrate Beverly’s rich and fascinating history, and we offer a variety of programs–lectures, walking tours, exhibits–that bring that history to life.
Has it been a smooth road?
History is never a smooth road, but it’s always interesting.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Historic Beverly – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Historic Beverly owns three historic properties which serve as tangible reminders of the city’s past and contribute to the richness of Beverly’s built environment. Our collection is both broad and deep, hundreds of thousands of items in total. We are particularly strong in early maritime history, the American Revolution, transportation (especially train) history, the people and estates of the Gold Coast, and the story of the United Shoe Machinery Corp. We are proud to be the repository for this community’s history and of our role to preserve both the tangible evidence, and the intangible stories, that illustrate that history.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Beverly is historic, scenic, and welcoming. The beaches and parks, the great restaurants, the wonderful people, make this a terrific place to live and work.
