Today we’d like to introduce you to Stefanie Lucas.
Stefanie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Boston Interiors started over 30 years ago, as just a bedroom store and now we are a furniture store that carries living room, bedroom, dining room and much more! Our focus is to curate a beautiful collection of products in our stores so that you don’t have to walk through rows and rows of furniture that is not your style. We want to show you how it can look in your home and provide you with inspiration. And we have a fabulous team of design associates that can either guide you through your purchase in the store or even come to your home and design every single room for you. We pride ourselves in trying to make the furniture buying process fun and inspiring. I like to think that our design associates’ approach is sort of like shopping with your best friend — they’ll be there for you if you want them to help, or they’ll just support you in your own vision. I am very proud to be the leader of such a wonderful team that makes up our business!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We have grown to now nine stores in New England and, sure, there were struggles along the way. The economy in 2009-10 certainly impacted our business like it did everyones. But we worked hard to get through that time and we did. Also, the furniture buying landscape has changed a lot, especially in the last five years, with more and more shoppers starting the process online or outside the store. Boston Interiors has focused on making our website be a true reflection of what you can find in our stores, plus we have launched a catalog so that you can “shop” at home, and get ideas before you even come into the store. Ultimately, we still believe that most people want to sit on a sofa or on a bed before they buy it, and they like to idea of working with a live person or reputable company, but we recognize the power of that pre-shopping experience and we want to be a part of that.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We think we offer a great furniture buying experience, overall. This certainly starts with the quality and design of our products, and we shop the world to get inspiration and find them. But it is also about what happens when you go into a Boston Interiors store. You won’t feel like you are being pushed to buy, or followed around. We know that this is a big deal for most people. Furniture is a long term part of your home, your life, your family. That means something to us. So we try to think about how to help you find the things that make your home comfortable and beautifully livable….not overly designed. And we also know that most people don’t want to spend a fortune yet they want something “perfect”. That’s sort of our niche. We offer lots of customizable products, like choosing from hundreds of fabrics on your sofa, to picking the wood finish and hardware for your dining room set. And for most items, we can do this customization pretty quickly. All of our upholstery and much of our wood products are made in North America, so we can get it made and delivered in about six weeks or so. So the focus for us is really offering this level of product, design, and service, at really affordable prices, which very pleasantly surprises most people!
What were you like growing up?
I have always been a very high energy person. Even today, I find it hard to “turn off” my thinking at night. I think I have always had a balance of creativity with practicality, which still works for me today in running Boston Interiors. I started my career on the creative side of the advertising agency business, then moved into apparel and footwear, before coming into the furniture business about 12 years ago. Within home furnishings, my heart is really in the upholstery and fabric business. I still love what beautiful color and pattern can do to your home and it makes me feel good that we offer a product that will ultimately make people (hopefully!) love their home.
