Today we’d like to introduce you to Shuai Yang.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I, as the only child of my parents, was born in Beijing in 1998. I began making art from four years ago and attended MassArt for undergraduate degree in printmaking. I moved to Boston at the age of eighteen, and later, I found myself very interested in the death of my father and the memories of my family.
Please tell us about your art.
My art shows my thinking of my father’s cancer and death. Being far away from home, I realized the necessity of remembering and retrospecting personal experience. The Physical Space Outside Cells is a collaborative piece of art. (Collaborate with Natalie Grayson) I add my elements onto the black and white drawings to question the relationship between a life and society or its surroundings. The answer of this question is that we can always gain power from our own life experience but not from the society.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I work as a teaching assistant at my college and do other works in galleries in summer. There are many ways to earn money as long as you would like to put effort in supporting your art making.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
At MassArt school shows or on my website.
