Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly Taft.
Shelly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Twelve years ago I gave birth to my daughter and decided to breastfeed. I had some challenges in the beginning, but luckily I was able to receive support and expert help from an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. The support I received was both instrumental to my breastfeeding success but also to my overall confidence as a new mother. When my children were older, I decided that I would like to help new families build their confidence as well. I started off as a birth and postpartum doula before transitioning over to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Going back to nursing school was not easy with three young children. There were a lot of late nights and hectic days. But my family and children were very supportive of my goals.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Shelly Taft LPN, IBCLC story. Tell us more about the business.
As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, I have received extensive training and knowledge in the clinical management of breastfeeding. I specialize in complex issues, such as low milk supply, low or no weight gain, painful latch, etc. By providing services in client’s homes, I not only make it convenient for new families to receive the expert support they need, but I am better able to observe how they function as a family in their own environment, which allows me to adapt my care plan to what will fit their needs.
The service I provide is supportive of all family dynamics and is personalized to each family’s goals. I pride myself in supporting a family to achieve an enjoyable experience when nurturing their baby, no matter what that looks like.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am very lucky to have amazing, knowledgeable, and supportive colleagues. Starting your own business isn’t easy – but it was so much easier than I expected due to the connections I made with local IBCLC’s who were willing to offer me guidance and support.
