Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean McLaughlin.
Sean, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Although I started making records in the mid-90’s, 37′ Productions technically started in Los Angeles in the early 2000’s. I started working with L.A. and Boston artists under that name when I wanted to attach my identity to the city where he began (the name is a reference to the height of the Green Monster). In 2006, I found a studio space on the south shore in a studio space in a century-old shoe factory on the South Shore. In the first year the studio was opened, the first two artists produced there were signed to labels with international distribution.
Since, 2006, I have worked with artists both locally (Sarah Blacker, OldJack, Ruby Rose Fox) and internationally (Matchbox Twenty, Queensryche, Dark New Day). My true passion, however, is working with artists helping them develop their artistic identity though making recordings that represent the best versions of themselves. “I like to help artists find their personal truth”, is the best way to describe it
In 2017, I opened a second room right next to the original studio. There is upcoming music this year from artists such as Annie Brobst, Six Fox Whiskey, Lady Pills, Fil Pacino, Gracie Day, Los Goutos, Set Fire, Daisybones and Vary Lumar.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Following an artistic path always has its obstacles. Within my first year of working I got the news that I had skin cancer. I had it removed, then, because I had no health insurance, so having to pay off the medical bills. Once
I was in the clear, so to speak, the move to Los Angeles happened. The 9/11 attacks followed and, much like the rest of the country, work was put on hold, making the start of my L.A. career tight financially.
Opening a studio, much like starting any business, always has its challenges. Where do I find clients? How do I fill time? What equipment or resources do I need to invest in? All of these have multiple possibilities for answers, and you take the calculated risks where you can.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
37′ Productions is a recording studio best known for work with local artists across multiple genres, most notably singer/songwriter, country, rock and Americana, I’m probably best known as a vocal producer and mix engineer, taking already recorded tracks and making them sound the best I can.
I’m not sure what sets me apart from others. I just try to do exceptional work every day and constantly challenge myself to get better.
What were you like growing up?
I was always an inquisitive person. I loved to read and loved movies. I was really into sic-fi and really got into music in my preteen years. I was a quiet boy, and not exactly popular in school. It’s a typical story: artistic kid as high school outcast. I think for most high school outcasts, we found solace in our forms of self-expression, and I was fortunate enough to turn that passion into a career.
