Meet Sarah Surette of Sarah Surette Photography in Westford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Surette.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always loved art. I was the quiet little kid that colored and kept to herself. Always loved when a book report involved drawing something…you know, when the rest of the class groaned loudly about it.

That took me through to art school, Montserrat College of Art, where I ultimately chose Graphic Design as a major because it seemed like it would be the easiest route for landing a job after graduation. And I guess it was, I did get a job right out of college.

But I’d had a point and shoot camera in high school, and upgraded to a DSLR in college, and was always taking photos of everything. I never understood how people could come back from vacation with little to no photos. I was just in my backyard taking hundreds…thousands when I went on vacation!

The lines are kind of blurred in between then and now. An aunt had me take photos at her second wedding, another aunt passed my info to her Crossfit gym and it became a semi-regular gig. For actual money! A Crossfit gym member asked me to photograph a work event of hers, I took my brother’s engagement photos, I found online courses and majorly influential photographers who were killing it, and it took off from there. I decided to go for it!

I’m not full-time yet, but excited to get there someday. I love shooting portrait, high school seniors, bloggers, and couples! Slowly getting my feet wet with weddings too.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, of course not. Is it ever? I’m still nowhere near the end of the road.

There are always issues of self-doubt and always trying to improve. Dealing with strangers is always nerve-wracking, can I make them feel comfortable? Will the lighting be amazing today? It says 30% chance of showers! Should I cancel?!? AHHH!

And of course always trying to keep up with blogging and website updates, social media and editing photos and doing it most of that on the weekends and after getting home from my full-time job. All times when you don’t want to be working.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sarah Surette Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in Natural Light Portraits!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success is being able to support yourself while doing what you love.
